The carb idea article sounds nice.

It jogged my memory about the RX-4 Mazda truck a guy used to have.

It had a rotary engine with a 4bbl down draft Hitachi carb!

Maybe a neat idea for the fairly stock slant?

The carbed rotary engine models (R100,RX2,RX3,RX4, RX7 and the rotary truck) had a 4bbl carb.

if memory serves is a zenith stromberg carb. We concluded with Ed that it would be "the" 4 barrel carb for a mild stock or mildly hopped up slant.

I had a buddy with one of those on a 1983 RX7... zippy car... but after a while the carb tanks (the odo on my buddy's car was like 80K...he was the second owner) and becomes an annoying nuisance....

Ok, go with the early models....... (this would be early to mid 70s)

The R100 was 60 cuin, so probably has the smallest carb, plus there weren't very many of them

The RX2 and RX3 were 70 cuin
The RX4 and truck were 80 cuin

So there's probably two different carbs.

BTW, a rotary behaves like a normal 4-stroke engine at double the stated capacity (70=140, 80=160)

BTW2, rotaries like high rpm (at least 7000 rpm redline)

BTW3, Each induction stroke on a rotary is half the stated capacity 70 = 35 cuin; 80 = 40 cuin. Compared to a 225 = 37.5 cuin. Plus with the intact manifold on a rotary, each rotor only sees 1/2 the carb; so each piston on a slant will see the whole carb.... you shouldn't have any problems with the carb size

I also found a lot of Weber conversion kits on offer, which suggests to me that this miniature Japanese 4bbl may be a problematic unit.

I would think an RX-4 truck carb by virtue of being a "truck" would have less crap on it.

That last carb SSD posted has a lot of crap on it..............

Don't need all the extras......

The Hitachi's may be for the 13B engine (80cuin) and not the 12A (70cuin)...


The webers are for race ported rotaries, not very streetable.

Weber is very tuneable and I was able to get MPG. Mine is 32/36 DFEV.

I'm referring to few models that are "race-only" webers especially ones that does not have vacuum advance port.

Also, there are many that can do MPG like DCOEs. but no port for advance vacuum.

back in the early 70's when chrysler started with electronic ignition many hack job mechanics and many good ones hurried to cut wires and retrofit points because "electronic ignition ain't good". This has been that way around cars forever. Just because you see peopl offering webber conversion kits (BTW I think that webber is a nice carburetor if you have a noisy red little italian car) ain't means that hitachis, solex mikunis, mikunis, pierburg solex or other makes are not good. Most of those rather obscure carburetors outperforms webbers by waaay too much. For 2 barrels options if you're looking for optimum bang on the low end and killer mileage, plus crisp throttle response and nice power, AISAN are very good carburetors. primary is 26 mm secondary is 32, you can run a single carb on a stocker or 2 x 2 barrels on a hopped up motor. Those came in toyota celicas from late 70's early 80's.
