I installed the 10" factory clutch in my 64 valiant 3 speed 170 \6. my problem is when the engine is running & I hit the clutch pedal the gears don't stop spinning.
so I figured I had the same problem as tophat above with the friction disc clearence issue as I used the same clutch, but I dropped the driveshaft tonight and with the trans in first and with my lady operating the clutch pedal I could spin the trans output shaft and I watched the clutch operate as it should normally. so what could be the cause of the issue when the engine is running and how can I remedy this? please help

Possibly a tight pilot bushing?

the disc is in correct, I made sure of that when I put it in cause I learned that one before. any way to loosen up the pilot bushing without pulling the trans?

I had a problem with the bushing that came with the kit was too small for the input shaft so I bought another that slipped on perfect but maybe I put too much grease when I put the trans in

When you spun it and watched the clutch work, did you spin it by hand? I could grab my output flange with a pair of big "channel locks" and turn it, but it was not smooth. You have to look closely to see it hitting with the clutch pedal pushed down.

I doubt it is to much grease.

I was spinning the output shaft by hand with little resistance.

problem solved today in an unusual manner. drained out the ATF I had in the trans and filled it with 80w90 gear lube. The thicker fluid provided just enough resistance so that the clutch worked as it should and the gears didn't grind when shifting from neutral to first so I'm happy :D
