O.K. I was rattling this around in my head today and thought I'd see if anyone knows how to make it actually work or if price and other factors make it a foolish dream, or if megasquirt II already does all this with a lot less work and cost with a simple crank position sensor.

Anyway, here is the setup. Modify a distributor cap so that instead of aligning for a spark, it activates a relay or some other switch which could be used to energize a coil and an injector. The standard electronic trigger could still keep time and send a signal to all 6 coils and injectors, but only 1 coil and 1 injector would be able to be stimulated depending on the position of the rotor in the cap (which will be modified as I hope to explain)

First possible mod: Spring loaded mechanical switches mounted to the outside of the cap with slide plates inside that are actuated by a modified rotor as it passes by and holding each switch for about 50 degrees of rotation. Seems like wear and tear would be a concern, but parts would be cheap and no relay lag would need to be accounted for.

Second mod idea: How do those pertronic points elimination setups work exactly? Seems like if you got 6 of the little detectors and drilled holes in the side of the cap, that you could make a rotor to trigger one at a time. This would even eliminate the need for the factory style electronic trigger unless you want to use it for a tach output. I'm sure 6 pertronic setups are not a cheap way to go, but it's a very doable project technically speaking.

The last method is to put 6 pickup coils in the dizzy and mill off all but one of the teeth on the reluctor. Forget modifications to the cap/rotor because you won't even need them anymore, which is good because you'll hardly have room once you've crammed all 6 pickup coils into there.

One downside with any of these setups would be the loss of the vacuum advance because of the dist cap's stationary nature. Mechanical advance would still work just fine or could be eliminated if desired.

Any interest in such a thing? Can you tell that my job is not very challenging some days? Did anyone even bother to read this? What do you think?

Sorry if I can't respond to your feedback quickly, but I only get Internet time about one or two days a week, and usually I would rather be working on my car when the weather is fair.

Some body locally did that on a late distributor (locked out timing) to make a cam sensor for a DYI EFI setup....

You should do a search for the bosch D-jetronic system...
It was used by vw, mercedes, and volvo in the early 70's
probably others too.

It uses a distributor like what I think you are talking about.
Maybe search for volvo 164 stuff

You'd need an ECU of some sort to control the injector pulse width - think of that as an injector's equivalent of a coil dwell time, but it changes throughout the rev range. Using breaker points to control the injectors would make the fuel amount decrease as the RPM came up. And as long as you have an ECU there already, it could control a wasted spark or coil-on-plug ignition with just one or two sensors instead of six.

I don't mean to rain on your idea parade, but:

1. The Bosch D-Jetronic system was a very early effort, and given that it was pretty miraculous, but parts are fearfully costly, adjustments and repairs are fiddly and don't tend to stay fixed, and the fuel injector triggering setup (a pair of breaker points operating as "trigger points") is right out of the stone age. Wear, tear, maladjustment and mechanical failure are all issues.

2. I think we are at a point now where there are so many off-the-shelf ways of controlling fuel injectors — Megasquirt, SDS, etc. — that the endless hassle of attaining and maintaining alignment, synchronisation, and just plain function of the setups you propose would not be worth it.

I developed an engine management system. It is much more work than you think. The mechanical approach is limited. It is possible to make the engine run, making it run great is another thing.

I have had a car running since 2003. I and have spent since then on additions and improvements. For me it a hobby. No plans to sell. Just having fun.

Thanks to all who responded. I guess I may not have fully explained. I was expecting to use a megasquirt controller along side this mod, because I had heard somewhere that it was not capable of true sequencial injector control and instead did 'batch fire' which I also heard was not the best way to go with a slant six for fuel distribution. I figured this distributor setup would allow true sequencial injector control by giving the megasquirt this additional distributor info.

I don't propose to have any inside info, rather, I was hoping to get some feedback (I did) I'm just learning.

I did a little reading and price research myself to find the only remotely plausable application would be to turn the distibutor into a cam position sensor, but other less quirky solutions seem to already be available from the megasquirt community.

It sounds like my answer is wasted spark and batch fire using megasquirt II as it was designed. Have I got this wrong?

The trouble with a "fuel distributor" approach is that you're limited to very short injector pulse widths. It's not uncommon to have the injector open for around 600 crank degrees at full throttle in a normal setup.

But batch firing the injectors will get you pretty decent fuel distribution on a slant six. To improve on it, you'd not just need sequential injection but individual cylinder trim tables. The upcoming Megasquirt-II Sequencer does have that capability. But you'd need to do something like rig up six thermocouples and spend a couple days on the dyno if you wanted to get individual cylinder trim dialed in well enough to do any good.

Don't worry about batch fire. That is a "last 5%" mod, IMHO. I will try it sometime, but both mine are batch and run well.
