I have a Carter bbd from a 318 that I'm going to try on my slant six. I'm not worried about choke issues, but I have read in other posts about the 318 bbd carbs having holes in the throttle plates which can affect idling. My bbd has these holes, should I try to avoid a potential issue and use a little jb weld, etc., or should I "cross that bridge" when I come to it?
It's okay if my car is inoperable for a couple of days.

I vote "cross the bridge when you get there".
Try the carb and then adjust it as needed.

I have thr v8 bbd carb with holes and no modifications on my 198 slant six and it ran fine before I took the engine apart to be rebuilt.

Update: She runs!
My Volare starts right up with it's Offy 4bbl intake and Carter bbd with an adapter. The idle is a little rough, and I still have to install the kickdown linkage (Lokar cable), but at least it's running.
Oh yeah, I have to figure out how I'm gonna attach the air cleaner. I have a stock air cleaner that fits, but there is no screw to hold down the lid. Oh well.
I'll be fiddlin' with the carb for awhile...

I got the kickdown linkage installed. I also changed the spark plugs, it's been awhile. The idle is still a little rough. I have adjusted the idle mixture screws, is there anything else I should check? It feels like there is a small vacuum leak, I'm wondering if I should plug those two holes in the throttle plates, what do ya'll think?

I would temp plug them (not JB weld think bubble gum??) then if you need to take it out you dont mess things up. A vac leak test might be in order.

Also, I've never done a vacuum leak test. What sort of equipment is required for this?

JB can be peeled off easily. Screws falling out can damage things.

JB Quick is good to go in 2 hours.

I glued the screws in my BBD that I am rebuilding. They are brass and the shaft got ruined when I pulled it apart.

How's the shaft play on the passenger side?

True and true...but the first of those truths kinda worries me. How do we make sure the JB Weld doesn't flake off on its own?

I've soldered-up these throttle plate holes before. You have to work quickly so as not to warp the plate. Really, I think probably the small-screw-and-nut technique is probably best for a try-it-and-see approach; if I knew for a fact I didn't want the holes, I'd probably look at some kind of a low-profile rivet.

Yes, I have a Weber. Actually, two Webers on an Offy dual intake. I removed the whole deal and reinstalled the Offy 4bbl intake with a Carter bbd. I just want a simpler setup, and maybe a little better fuel efficiency.
I have to say that this is a remanufactured Carter bbd from O'Reilly Auto Parts. I know that I'm just asking for trouble, and if I can't get it to work right, I may just go with a new Holley 350 cfm from Summit, Jegs, etc.
But I have a couple of days off now to mess with it some more.
I wonder how one of those Webers on the 4bbl intake would do? Then I would have a spare Weber carb, but I might want to sell this Offy dual Weber carbs setup complete.
I dunno, we'll see. Thanks to all of you for your input. Feel free to comment on anything I've said.
