Hey guys, thanks for all your help. Couldn't do this project alone.
I do have head studs but used the gray fiber head gasket that came in the Felpro set from Car Quest. Where are you getting the copper head gaskets and can I use them without O-ringing the block? I don't have a wide band yet, I'll get one before it goes back together. That means I need to run race fuel also at $8.50 a gallon  . I think I'll do some more head porting while the head is off also.

(shaker)What are you doing to you motor? You were running a bone stock one when the 12.90 et was run, right?
12.95 was all stock engine. I painted the valve cover and installed 340 valve springs (which didn't help it rev higher)

I got the copper gasket last year sometime from one of the Cox brothers and I do believe you must run an o-ring with a copper gasket. You may not have to run race gas, just watch your boost, timing, and your air fuel ratio. You may have detonated the motor in this case causing the gasket to let go. Another alternative is Metanol injection. You can use windshield solvent up to 100% straight. I use 100%. Its been a while but Meth is over 100 octane. There are to many different numbers out there to know for sure. Not only does it help with octane (very little) more importantly it cools the incoming fuel charge. I've done a little testing with a thermo couple and it seems to reduce the compressed air temp 10-15* below ambient.

I'm doing a refresh to the motor. I'm only waiting for a decision on the custom rods. Nothing exotic. Shooting for a 8:1 cr, ported head, big valves...Just durable because I want to put A LOT of boost into it.

That car is going to fly when you get it straightened out. Any updates?

Yep, just purchased a T4 .58 A/R turbine housing. Went with the T4 since I had the header and downpipe to fit it. In the future I may reweld, build a better header and try a T3 if this doesn't get me the spool I need. Do you know if the Snow Performance meth injection is any good? Was looking at the STG-2 meth kit and the AEM wideband in Jegs. Hows your project going? Are you going to get to do some racing this year? Later.

How about a picture of your header! I'd love to see it. I'm still running the stock manifold but have the flanges to make a header. I'm running this meth kit and 100% meth. I'm very happy with the kit and their forums admin is very good at staying on top of any questions. Install was very easy. I'm using the 7gph injector.

I'm still porting the Clifford 4bbl intake I picked up. I have 2 of the 6 done. Not a lot of time to work on it though. 15-20 minutes at a time.

I'm still impressed with that MPH you ran. 20+ mph on the big end is huge. I picked up only 16mph for the last 1/8 I bet it could have a low 12 in it easy. I wish my car was as light as yours.

I'm using the AEM wideband. I got it off of ebay.

Thanks for the link on Devils Own. I think I'll use them. Here is a few pics of the header installed. I had a set of used 1 5/8" small block headers that I cut up and bead blasted. Cut and welded them and when I do it again I will use new ones. Pin holes everywhere! Angle my wastegate for better flow and run the #1 and #6 pipes into the header alittle better. The goal is to hit a 12.90 then 11.90's. Later

Cool, thanks for the pics. I have flanges and have to work them over a little to make them match the ports. I'm going to go with 1 5/8 pipe and maybe a 6 into 1 merge pipe with a 2.5" exit. With that mph you ran, you're darn close to 12.90 now...just need to get it to launch. Were you able to get it to WOT on the 102mph pass?

The header looks better in real life than in pics. It also has a 3" mandrel pipe to the turbo which doesn't help the spool issue. I would have gone with a 6 into 1 but I used what I had. 6 into 1 I would think would be better but then what I have. Was maybe going to go 2 - 3 into 1 then Y pipe to increase the scavanging, but I had a set of rusted out slant headers that weren't worth cutting. I posted 2 102 passes. The first is the one I showed you guys. That one was done with a 80 jet, 4.5 PV and only 80% throttle blade opening in the primary circut only. I jetted up to a 82 and opened the blades all the way on the second run but got to about 150 feet before the traps and the head gasket blow. I lifted and then floored it but it only evened out. No mph gain. I'm assumming if the gasket wouldn't have blow, it was around a 104 mph. Just a guess though. No secondaries. I have since added a second -6 line to the carb from teh regulator. I believe I was running out of fuel to open the secondaries on the top end. I used almost the same amount of fuel as my dads 11.80 360ci Dart running the same amount of times.
The only porting I did was in the bowls (which was a good deal of cutting). I didn't even gasket match the headers and intake. I may this time since the head is coming off.
If I remember right. My trap RPM was 4500 - 4600 in 3rd. I shifted between 5500 and 6000.
How much boost did you have when stalling the convertor? Did it drop when you floored it? I'm hoping to get around 10-15 psi at the line to get the convertor to work.

The inlet into the buick turbo is 2 1/4" On my 12.95 pass, I foot braked it to 4-5 psi. Any more and it kills the tires. I can foot brake it to 10-12 psi but like I said it just roasts the tires.

Once I launch, it only builds boost. There is no drop when it it floored when the light goes green.

I have a single AN6 line to the carb and 3/8" to the regulator as well as the return line. No starvation issues.

That is a darn nice set-up. Hey where do you get those kits to make your own headers, with the bends already in it. I've tried to look in my free time but don't get far, thanks!

I just cut apart a set of SB mopar headers. Easier than you think.

Hey,
Got some questions for all of you and an update. I took the Valiant back to the track with a Meth kit, wideband and the .58 turbine. It helped down low but could'nt make a full pass. The best 60 ft was a 2.9. The problem is in the valve guides. On my second pass last weekend, I hit second gear and it started to miss. I took it apart today and found two bent exhaust valves. I had bronze guides installed and I guess that was the wrong thing to do. All the exhaust valves were fairly tight taking them out, but the intakes were fine. Tomorrow the guides are coming out.
Here is the issue I'm having:
Should I stay with the 170ci and get a smaller turbo? I will need to purchase a turbo, change my header outlet and down pipe. Find a different carb or go EFI.
I have a couple nice 225ci Swather motors here that could work well with the 170 forged pistons. I would just need new rings and a hone. Bigger cubes would spool the turbo better and not have to modify everything. Maybe with the 225 I could use my whole carb instead of just the primary.
As much as I would like the get the 170 to run good, I'm leaning towards the 225.
Any Input? Thanks

I would try the 225 myself as the torque will help the 60' time and get the turbo spinning faster. I still think the carb is about 50% too large.

I'd have a talk with the person that put in the valve guides and left the clearance too tight. The shop owes you at least a guide hone so the clearance is right and should replace the bent valves too.

Well, just got back from racing today. The Valiant ran really good, better than expected. Here is the best slip:
60' - 1.69
330' - 4.836
1/8 - 7.511
MPH - 90.76
1000' - 9.841
1/4 - 11.839
MPH - 112.03
This was running the 225ci swather, 22 psi boost, 23* total timing, 88 jet in primary, no secondary opening and wide band showing 12.5-12.9 on the big end. I was fattening it up after this run but the meth kit was screwing up so the runs got very inconsistant. In and out of the gas. I started the day with a 12.85 et with 15 psi - 12.51 w/ 18 psi and a 11.83 w/ 22 psi. It was weasing on the big end also. I think an 11.50 was in it today if the meth kit would have kept working. The switch is bad. It will either not come on or it will stay on and hose the motor down inside. I have some good video my wife shot so it will need to go on you-tube. I finally got to do a burnout. She really hooked hard. Felt nice. Very surprising. I was expecting a 12.90 today and got much more.
Just another 11 second Slant 6.

Maybe 10.90 next? (I have no roll bar though)
