Do you mean between 72 and 73, the motor was set back 2"? I never knew that. How did they get the trans mounts to work out? Does the later car have the trans mount further back? And how about the torsion bars? They go in the trans mount cross member. If all torsion bars are the same length, then the LCA's must be further back too. If this happens, then the wheel base is shortened by 2". This is too interconnected to be simple. It wold be interesting to take a tape measure to two of these cars and figure it all out.

The information I have:

The engine/tranny is set back 2" in the '74 as compared to the '63.

Wheelbase for the 1963 Dodge Dart GT is 111"

Wheelbase for the 1974 Plymouth Valiant is 111"

My driveshaft will be 2" short according to this.

I have had three cars here recently all with 7 1/4 rear ends. All the original driveshafts are here.

The 108" wheelbase '75 Duster and 108" wheelbase '67 Valiant both had 51.5" driveshafts.

The 111" wheelbase '72 Dart has a 54 3/8" driveshaft. That's only 1/8" short of the difference in wheelbase between the Dart and Valiants.

If the '66 and earlier cars have the engine and transmission farther forward then the driveshaft will have to be longer. In fact this chart shows a '66 Dart driveshaft is 2.25" longer than the '67-'76 unit with the same 904 trans and 7 1/4 rear axle. Looks like you could put an 8 3/4 under the car with your existing driveshaft, but need a 56.6" driveshaft to keep your existing rear end.

I just got back from DusterIdiot's place. He showed me where the two inches comes from when the wheelbase is equal. It's all in the mount.

Hey Doc! Did you ever work up one of your instructional posts of using the spool mounts with a flat mount K-Frame?

Ceej and I looked things over since I was fortunate to have a '67 and a '76 at our disposal (and his '74)...

The way it looks from the 'late' stand point... the 67-72 uses an 'offset' mount on the engine to move it back 2" in relation to the 'pad/sandwich' on the K-member... the 'spool' mounts use a straight mount that locks in the cradles on the 73-76 K...
