Hello all,

Been working on my 63 valiant, just got it down from washington and the engine was running great. Last night while driving as i came to stop light it just bogged down and Died!!! It will turn over and start but is backfiring from the carburator and will not idle. After to speaking to my old man he told me to check the distributor, and it is a little loose, I have been trying to adjust it with no success. I live in Campbell, CA and am looking for a hand getting this thing dialed in. I'm new to the whole working on cars thing so go easy on me.

a little background on my slant:

so.... let me know if you would like to give me a hand. thanks in adv ance!!!

I would install a points style distributor just to "trouble-shoot" the problem.
I have never had good luck with "unilite" distributors.
If you need a known working points distributor, let me know, I live in Sunnyvale.

Have you pulled the distributor out at all?

So whats the story...you were driving and stopped at a light and it just died. Ever since then it just backfires and doesn't idle at all? Did you try to work on it between then that caused it to backfire or did the backfiring start right after it wouldnt run at the light?

The backfiring from the carburetor started just after it died. I have pulled the distributor and set to TDC to best of my knowledge, still same backfiring from carb. tonight i will pull valve cover and check valve lash, cam spec sheet says to set intake to .016 and exhaust .018. any other suggestions let me know!!!!!!

thanks for the help.

**note**
This engine has been dipped, reconditioned and put together by machine shop in washington. It has all new parts listed previously and ran perfect. I drove it down 2 weeks ago (750 miles ) to california with no problems at all. The cars timing was great and it ran very smooth up until this point.

Donnie,

The valve lash is too tight!
Let it have a little more seat time, run .012 and .022 and I bet it will settle right down. :D

Found the problem......... it was pretty obvious as soon as i took off valve cover!

the cup on the #2 exhaust push rod broke off,,,,,, most likely do to rocker arm being to loose!!!!!!!!!!

Push rods came with cam kit from clifford,,, has anybody else had a problem like this.

I will get a replacement one and put it in and check all valve lash's and then see how it runs,,,, anything else i should do let me know.

again thanks for the input.

(reading up on previous posts really helped, this site rocks!!)
