Crank intact, one side of cap released by bolt shearing from rod and hanging cap got flung into the pan by a seized wrist bearing or bent rod

Classic case of not inspecting/lubing the muffler bearings.

Either that or the giggle pin fell off the laughing shaft!

- Are the rod bolts still tight?
- Is the con rod still connected to the crank?
- How many pieces is the con rod in?
- Is the piston still in one piece?
Since the contest is still open, here is my guess.


The crankshaft broke at the rod journal, connecting rod is not on the crank (or is on a what is left of the rod journal) and struck the oil pan. The rod is on one piece but bent, and the piston has broken.

Looks like terrylittlejohn came the closes with his guess. Terry can start driving (and boat crossings) from New Foundland so he can collect on his prize in Samoa, CA... and do some racing with us with his blown SL6 car! :wink: :lol:

From what I see, #6 rod bearing spun and the owner kept driving. The bearing was completely shredded and destroyed, no piece bigger then a dime, spread all over the bottom of the oil pan.

The con rod's inner surface looks "jack-hammered" and the crank's journal surface has turned blue from the heat. The con rod bolts / nuts held, (sort of) as the rods "big end" exploded into 4 pieces. ( the main beam and 3 smaller pieces) At some point, one of the nuts was sheared-off the bolt... but those two pieces of big-end stayed together on the sheared bolt's shank. :shock:
Here is a photo of the mess left inside the oil pan:

The piston is in one piece but it has a big gouge up one side and a large crack down the other. The top edge of the piston is eroded away and the ring lands are collapsed from the piston over-extending into the combustion chamber. There are some little valve "tap dancing" marks on the piston crown.

The block and other bearings look surprisingly good for this level of failure. The biggest nick is on the bottom of the #5 cylinder (white arrow) and that has nicked the bottom of that piston but my guess is, that piston is OK and can be reused.
