The scalloped clutch cover for the 10" disc isn't as strong as the other, smaller clutch covers with the same bolt pattern. The 9.5" clutch as used behind the 273 would be a good choice for someone with an A833 as Spec already stocks the 9.5" clutch.

Greg, Jared is down for one as well, so I think that makes 4. We just need one more person then? I would like to get this ordered ASAP and get moving on it.

Anyone else need one?

Lou do you have a list of folks that bought the bells? Maybe that would be a good way to reach folks that might not see this thread?

I was under the impression that the 273 used the same sized clutch (10") as the slant 6 trucks did, only better.

About the SPEC clutch for the 273, I talked to David at SPEC about 6 months ago and he said the SD041 stage 1 kit for the 273 was a 10.5" clutch. I was hoping to use the 10" cover and a 10" disk from a Toyota Tacoma to make a setup for my R154.

SD041 isn't the correct kit for an A-body with a 273. You cannot fit a 10.5" clutch on the 122 tooth flywheel, it has to be a 130 tooth flywheel which doesn't fit a slant. I believe the 9.5" 273 clutch is SD041-2. If you look up Dodge - Coronet,Demon,Super Bee,Lancer it shows this kit for '65-'69 273 engines. I had a 9 1/4" clutch built for my road race 225. When that blew up I moved it to my 273 as I was using the small bellhousing and flywheel.

hi all,

So far, this is a special kit, and is designed for a 'ahem' non-mopar application. It currently does not have a part number.

Yeah, Dion and I got a little off track. I just wanted folks with Mopar manual transmissions to know that Spec has 'em covered already.

Okay now I'm confused. I had thought there wasn't one specifically listed for 122 tooth slant flywheels at this point, which was the whole purpose of the thread.

The 9.5" clutch that Spec lists for 273s will bolt right into just about any manual trans slant six car you can think of with a 122 tooth flywheel and 23 spline transmission input shaft. This thread was originally about Spec building clutches for those using alternative transmissions like the T5.

Actually, there is a difference. The clutch kit on SPEC's website is a B&B based cover, according to their engineer that I have talked to.

The unlisted application is based on a diaphragm based cover.

Thanks,

Greg

I was thinking about this today, wouldn't it be easier to get a custom flywheel made? I'm just thinking of the simplicity of modifying a 10.5" clutch disc flywheel from a small block with a 130 tooth starter gear to the slants 122 tooth starter gear? I found a guy on bbd.com who is going to sell me a factory small block flywheel that he had turned down and modified to fit his slant with a 10.5" clutch disc and said it worked well for him in his slant. I'm just thinking of the fact that if one gets a custom sfi approved flywheel they could use a stock style pressure plate and stock clutch disc depending on your application. Like a borg and beck style pressure plate with a 10.5 clutch disc(stock size and style for a ford T-5) only costs about 180 bucks usd from summit and will always be available. I'm not trying to take away from gmader's efforts and I applaud him on his efforts but personally I think a 10.5 clutch that would be available in your local speed shop compaired to a 9 inch one that needs to be custom ordered. I'm not sure but as far as I know a bigger diameter clutch means more streetable and ease of use?

You will not be able to fit a 10.5" into your Slant bellhousing. A 10" barely fits. Your buddy must have used a V8 BH or found an ultra rare big Slant truck BH to fit that clutch. It is more work to adapt a V8 bellhousing. 9" will have less rotating mass to spin up/down on every shift. Saving $100 is not worth the trouble. I could go on...

I'm current;y running a 10" clutch behind a slant to a T5. I have no problem going back to a 9"clutch. the 10 barely fits. Back when I didn't have a pedal stop on my hydraulic clutch I could extend it so far that the pressure plate would rub the bellhousing. this is the way to go. besides that were talking better disc material and a better pressure plate design. special order is the name of the game when it comes to my car anyway. none of the drivetrain or suspension is original. it's all been upgraded or modified. it only looks like a 44 yr old car.

I'll be running a Quicktime smallblock chrysler to T-5/TKO-500/TKO-600 so I'll have the room to run the bigger disc anyways,
