Was 93 octane, factory Holley, fresh tune, cracked exhaust manifold, split reverse Y pipe to dual round turbo mufflers. No power steering, 65mph 35 lbs in the tires. Most of the time it did 25.5.

Best with the 2bbl has been 22.1 at 80-82. No A/C Sorry that is the speed I drive :lol: 16.7 with the A/C on and driving 70. And the ported shaved head.

Good Discussions Guys!

I got carb back last night. I am going to blow through it to make sure it is good and clean, and then throw it on tomorrow. If I can find an excuse to do some driving tomorrow, I might have a MPG update Friday or Saturday.

I would have thought a Dart Lite would be an overdrive?

Never touched the carb. When I bought this car it had 24,800 miles on it. What ever came from the factory on a 198. I am thinking the short stroke and the 3:23's were in a "sweet spot" AFA effeciency.

And no the car wasn't gutless.

When I pulled the manirolds off the exhaust was in 3 pieces :shock: As the engine warmed it got quiter.

Most...were OD. Someone here with much more experience then I said mine was an early one, courtesy of the 4 wheel drums. The option tag underhood specs the 3 speed.

HOWEVER, i did buy a 4 speed OD with the car.... :twisted: So once I get to the point of best MPG I can (within reason) then I will switch to the OD. My goal is to be able to offer some documented info regarding the improvements in MPG from 3 or non OD 4 speed to OD.

Story goes, like the start of every model year, where they 'work out' the bugs... the last year for the A-body is no stranger to this saga...

Many changes occured during the model year that would have been 'nice' if they had held the A-body over 'til '77 and worked out the failings of the A-body...

But in a nut shell:

A-body Ammeter became a 'shunt' style gauge
Disc Brakes became 'mandatory' in all cars after manufacture date of
1-1-76... so all 'early' 1976 models could be optioned with discs but many of the 'first ones' could even have 9 or 10" drums...

The first run of Feather Duster/Dart Lites during this time were optioned using 4 wheel drums, and the A-230 3pd stick on the floor... I've seen a green feather duster with that option the date tag on it was September of 1975...

Somewhere after that time they become the 'standard' A-833 OD with Discs... I know my 'red' donor Feather was date coded C08 and was A-833OD and discs (Dec. 08 1975)...

Even funnier, is there is no real mention of the Feather Duster in certain versions of the 1976 Service Manuals, but there are a set of TSB's that will update you on the distributor curve, carb adjustments, etc... among other things, my 1976 Parts Catalog seems to have been updated with the FD/DL stuff and other parts but carries the edition page of 'January 1977'.

I'll dig that "Turbinator up for you Dan. It is in my top tool box. Basically inserted below the carb. Stainless looking screen, 1-2 cross bars and the ring made out of pot metal.

Not by law... chrysler just got tired of optioning cars with '3' brake sets... so by order of the bean counters... 1-1-76... little cars got discs with 10-2 1/2 rear drums...big cars and wagons got discs with 11-2 1/2 drums.... of course a few slipped through otherwise a little after the date...

Sure, but 1975 (not 1976) was when the A833OD was first offered on the A-bodies. And I don't think the casting-porosity problems with the aluminum 833OD housings had yet reared its head by '76. I've seen '75s with this trans factory-installed (a very good old-car wrecking yard in Denver had a '75 four-door with 225 and 833OD from the factory). So...why would early production (per se) be an explanation for '76 DLs with 3-speed sticks?
(kind of a semi-rhetorical question; Chrysler did a lot of strange things during that timeframe)

Not by law...
Actually, yes, it was by law. Federal regulations concerning passenger car brake systems grew more stringent effective 1/1/76 with respect to max allowable pedal effort, max allowable fade, and a few other system performance parameters. Nowhere do the regs say "Disc brakes are required", but discs were/are the only practicable, cost-effective way to meet the system performance requirements.
