The ones I got this morning were all in Clevite boxes. They said made in the USA on 'em though. Is there even a diff. between the Melling and Clevite or where they made by the same foundry/manufacturer?

The Melling looks to be more durable (cast cover on the Melling vs. thin stamped steel on the Clevite) and has a larger hole on the intake side - whether this means more oil will flow . . . I've been told that 1 pump is as good as the other, tho. For about $5.00 one can order the high volume spring and put in a standard pump.

A thin stamped steel cover on a slant-6 oil pump?! Are ya sure? I'd have to see that...seems to me the design of the pump would not tolerate a stamped steel cover.

I tried the high pressure spring once. 70+ psi is a bit much so it came back out. I've been saving it for years now. I may put it in the 440 for the '52 Packard. V8 oil pump drive gears are quite a bit larger and stronger than slant pump drive gears.

I've seen the flat machined oil pump covers, but they were at least 1/8" thick not some stamped piece of sheet metal.

And they might be indignant that you don't understand the function of the relief valve.

My bad . . . okay, 1/8" and machined = still looks like a weak piece compared to the Melling.,

The stamped steel cover is pretty thick material, .125 (1/8th thick) if I remember right.

The flat cover was also on some of the early factory pumps, until the factory engineers discovered that it is possible for a small amount of water to collect at the lowest point in the pump, that place is in the pump's impeller cavity, against the flat cover's inner surface.
If that water freezes, the impeller jams and breaks the pump's drive gears.

The cast cover with the "bumps" allow for a small amount of water to settle outside the impeller cavity. The bump openings also helps the oil flow into and out of the impeller cavity a bit better.

The plate looks cast, and there's a serial number tag on it.

Made in Mexico.


Looks like it's been on the shelf for decades.


Warehouse was out, but they found one at a nearby Pep Boys with the computer.

It's funny that they don't know about the cheap price until you tell them.
Although the guy at the first Pep Boys told me of another bargain........ (I'll post it in Social Corner)


BTW, no gasket........ :cry:

It is interesting to see all the different versions of the SL6 oil pump from the same distributor...
So much for "FIFO" (first in - first out) inventory methods. :lol:
