I got my clifford shorties with Y-pipe at carlisle for $75, my Cherry Bomb Turbo Muffler for $19.95 and had a shop bend a 2 1/2" pipe from the Y-pipe to the muffler and a 2 1/4" pipe out the back for $90. Thats $195 for a killer sounding slant, ask Lou.

that's a pretty optimistic number for clifford shorties, especially if you need it done NOW and new ones go for over $300 without the y-pipe. do you have pictures of the pipes that were bent for you? and who did the work?

this is not the type of smokin' deal you are just going to find anywhere, and i'll bet long odds the OP is not so well-connected in the slant community. i sure wasnt when i had mine done. i walked in the door and they did a super clean job from start to finish in a day's time.

as i said, good luck.

Meineke made the pipes for me, and pep boys stocks the muffler.
Like I said I picked up the headers at carlisle in the swap meet, the cost had NOTHING to do with connctions within the slant comunity. The insallation was great and the guy made both pipes with out any pipes to copy.

All our OP here wants is a single pipe with noisy muffler not a set of duals with stupidly expensive Flowmasters, he wants to know what size pipe to run and what sounds good. Simple answer is 2 1/4" pipe works great with a stock slant and any turbo muffler will sound good.

My slant aint stock so I went a little larger with pipe and used headers, I wasnt about to just open my wallet and say take whatever you want because I'm unwilling to shop for a good deal

There is NO way you picked up 20HP by changing your exhaust but I guess you need to justify the $1100 plus the cost of the Dutras. sounds to me like you wasted alot of money.

Take your car to a smaller mom-pop operation-- or ask the local car show boys where they go---- tell the shop the sound you want & they should be able to do this in less than 1/2 day--- most likely they will come off the exhaust pipe- with 2" & expand to 2.25 under the starter area. Less than $200(2007 dollars) here in Wichita Ks.

The big shops run coupons in your local phone book also -- that might work--

Heck if you want loud -- get the cheap cherry bomb & get it hot & run through some water-- instant loudness.

Steponme

where did you spend that 1100. Was it the setup you had done at A&A or for a stainless one from Elite?

Also what was your final configuration...2.25 all the way back to the mufflers then 2 out the back...any h or x pipe? I think Slantsixdan said 2 or 2.25 all the way back with no crossover in a true dual setup sounded great.

Will be doing mine this summer....I hope.

Brent

wow, that was a nasty response. are you saying the dutras werent worth what i spent on them? Let doug justify himself to you, i could care less what you think of my exhaust.
zerglin87, keep us posted on how your luck goes with your exhaust and how much you end up spending. if someone of your skill level ends up with a clean, efficient and well-made exhaust system for less than $200 then i guess big-show phil here takes the biscuit.
do whatever makes you happy, I told you exactly how much i spent on my exhaust system and you now know exactly what it sounds like. Good Luck~

a&a, all on one invoice. detailed pics in the thread i referenced. all mandrel-bent, very good welds, stainless seal clamps throughout and 40K miles on the installation with no issues. i havent been unhappy enough with my exhaust note to take it in to elite yet. im certainly not crying over a few hundred dollars the way it's held up, either.

Just my take on it from the outside looking it. You're both happy with what you've done and with what you've spent so I don't see the issue. If someone gets a bargain and is happy with the results then great! If someone else goes in and spends more to get a quality product and is happy with the outcome then he has been well served and nothing has been wasted.

thats great but youve left out a third outcome... spending too little on the installation and having it fall apart on you or perform poorly. if you dont know what youre doing or dont have enough time, spending too little often ends up costing you more~

In any case, it's his money, and yours, not mine. The point of my post is to try to lower the temperature a notch. You're happy with yours, he's happy with his... so everyone's happy and there's no problem. *Whistling the tune to "Don't worry, be happy." 8)

Step..
I really like the exhaust sound from the Dart.....Just off idle and starting to rev it sounds like a V8 8)......then into the characteristic six cylinder sound...and into second gear I am reminded of the late '80s and early '90s Pontiac 6000 STE with the 2.8 V6....Thanks for providing the sound clip...gives me a great idea for my project Duster..
I would like to hear 70valiant' s exhaust as well if it is possible....
oh well maybe I can make it to one of the future Slant Six meets and hear these things in person..nico

I never said a bad word about the dutras I said $1100 plus the cost of dutras, I know they aren't cheap in cost or quality nor should they be. That means your system was over $1500 if you bought your Dutras from Doug. Have you ever heard (or read ) of me complaining about my exhaust system "falling appart or perfoming badly"?

There is alot to be said for doing things in a cost effective manner, which is what the OP is asking about.

All my post was intended to do was tell what I spent as a contrast to your post, YOU were the one that got defensive then accused my system of poor quality and performance.
