So today was going to be a leisurely valve stem seal replacement job to cut down on my Valiant's oil consumption. Pulled the valve cover and rocker assembly, put #1 on TDC and hooked up the air hose. Hssssss goes the air out the exhaust port (manifolds were already off). OK, try #2, dang this one's worse. I guess the person that adjusted all the valves to .010" before I got the car hurt things a bit. Crud. So the head is off and none of the valves are actually burned. Thank goodness for small favors. There is more of a ridge in the cylinders than I would like, but so it goes. I just don't want to pull the engine right now. The head will get a valve job and .100" removed from the deck. The milling will get me from 8:1 to a touch over 9:1 with a .040" head gasket. If it starts blowing major oil after the head is back on all I will have wasted is time and some gaskets.

Sounds like your two hour job got a tad longer!

with 9:1, you ought to get down the strip a bit quicker!

The increased compression should help with the economy and idle quality too. Leaky valves kill the idle quality. I will probably hurt the economy somewhat in the name of power with the Offy intake and Holley 390, but the 2 1/4" exhaust will help both power and economy. Also, my '67 head is casting number 2843169 so I have the newer combustion chamber. I didn't want to sink money into an older head so I was happy to find I have the newer one.

Looks like the valve bug is going around...

I noticed that too, on the my '67's original engine, it had the drool tube with the revised chamber...

Portland Engine Rebuilders will do the valve job with bronze guide inserts, hard exhaust seats and new valves for $225. The .100" mill is $80. Out the door for $305, hopefully.

Feature creep! Since I was in Portland I went and bought another set of stainless oversize valves from the guy we know as engnbldr on eBay along with 340 style valve springs and matching retainers. So the parts bill is up to $124 and the machining bill is going to be a little under $400. To sum up, new 1.70"/1.44" stainless valves, heavy duty springs and retainers, new valve guides, hard exhaust seats and a .100" mill for just over $500. The strong valve springs and retainers are going to wait on the shelf for the new cam as there is no sense in running them on the stocker.

Joshie,

What car is this engine in?

The Engine builder valves are in Portland?

I am still running stock valves with the 340 springs. I got about 30,000 miles on it now...it would have been fun to have put them in, but was not aware of them 2 years ago when I did the rebuild. I wonder if the new hardened exhaust seats I had put in would accommodate the larger valves?

This is all for my '67 Valiant. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the piston rings hang in there until I'm ready to do the bottom end.

Yes, the engnbldr valves are in Portland. http://www.engnbldr.com/ Contact info on that web site. I walked in there today and other than the stale cigarette smoke had a very pleasant experience.

If your hardened exhaust valve seats are 1.5" OD they will probably just make it with the 1.44" exhaust valves. Maybe.

The ported head, 4bbl and 2 1/4" exhaust really woke up the car. I went from a previous best of about 19.4 to 16.87 seconds. A huge improvement and a much more fun car to drive. Still have the stock A903 column shifted 3-speed and a 3.21 geared open 8 1/4 rear end. Now I need to get my 17" tires onto the car and the 20:1 guts into the steering box. The only bummer is the engine still uses oil. At least there isn't visible smoke in the rear view mirror!

Sounds like there are internal parts still have a Secret Separation... when they really should be Saved By Zero clearance...

Joshie,

Hopefully it's just leaking out somewhere and not really burning it.

No drips from the engine. Oil is going past the rings for sure. If I go down a hill with closed throttle and then open it up it rattles (knocks) a little until it gets cleaned out. It doesn't appear to be enough oil for visible smoke though. I haven't pulled the plugs since the ported head went on, but the plugs were not being fouled before. All this engine really needs to do is last about a year longer. Once the slant bracket car runs and passes tech the Valiant will get sidelined for a fresh bottom end and a 4-speed.

Sounds like there's no Cause to be Alarmed. Good thing there's no visible smoke, you know particulate emissions contribute to Red Skies. And of course once you stand on it, the rattle quits because the oil is Driven Out very quickly.

Next time hone the cylinders with Precious Stone. But I'm sure you will because it sounds like on your next build you're going Deeper and Deeper. Whether this engine will Stand or Fall depends on how much extra stress the fresh head and porting puts on the rings....

(I could go through the whole catalog like this... I can't help myself...)
