> A little background; rebuilt truck- NEW, orange ECU, Accel Super Coil,Blue Streak dist. cap, p/u, reluctor, Accel wires, Champion plugs. 3,100 miles on truck [ 1980 D100 225/6 2wd] This problem just started yesterday. I was riding down the road and the engine stopped as though I turned the key off. Checked under hood had no spark, everything was plugged in and all parts and wires were tight. Installed extra ballast resister and it fired up,problem solved, WRONG! Today it did the same thing , had yet another resister but it did not work this time. Yesterdays resister was fine by looking at the coiled wire in the back, not broken. Then it started and ran for 1 more mile and shut off again. This time I let it sit for about 5 minutes and it fired up. It seems to me that something electrical is heating up and causing my problem. My question is, with everything new what should I do first to isolate the component that is giving me problems?

Make sure that the ecu is getting a good ground, no paint on the surface its on or on the back of the ecu itself.

Also check out the regulator and alternator to make sure everything is intact. If either one is going nutty then your whole electrical system is going to be flaky.

Ive seen this a few times. check the resistance on the mag-pickup cold and hot. they sometimes heat up and exceed allowable resistance.

I had a similar problem. The fusible link was bad. It was OK when cold but would short-out when hot.

> Thanks for the quick responses. It ended up being a bad ground on my ECU. Thanks again! Pete

I know you found your problem, but I had a similar symptom with a different solution.
I bought this '74 Duster 360 that had a mind of its own as far as spark was concerned. It was erratic, didn't seem to have anything to do with hot or cold. It turned out to be that the previous owner had at one time replaced the dist cap on top of the wires from the pickup, pinching them enough to partially break the wires and in certain cases prevent the signal to the ecu.
