Just got this from Svensk Slanter, who's the service writer at a shop in Michigan. They've got a '65 New Yorker in the shop, in need of rear axle bearings. My '65 FPC says this car has an 8-3/4" rear axle. Here's what Svensk has to say:

===
Ever hear of the left side rear axle bearing being different OD than that on
the right hand side?

Got an SKF BR7 bearing. It's too small OD for the left but a dead match for
the right... Yep, we need it for the left side...
===

Any idea what's going on here? FPC calls for same bearing left and right, but the retainers are different left vs. right (preload adjustment on one side, IIRC)...

Yes, retainers are different L and R, but bearings should be exactly the same. IIRC the L is the adjuster side, so may appear to fit the bearing outer cone differently than on the other side.

???

The factory installed the adjuster on the passange side but I have seen the axles swapped side to side and even had a car where there were 2 right side axles, with 2 adjusters.... :shock: :roll: my guess is that it was someones answer to getting all right hand lug nut studs onto the vehicle. :? :lol:

I have never seen different size axle bearing ODs on the same axle assembly... How much of a size difference are we talking about?
