Since you have the original timing set, that may also be an issue.

Listen around the cover if you can safely get a mechanics stethoscope in there. Try to isolate the sound.

i don't have a mechanics stethoscope, most of you guys have seen my tool bag there just aint much in there. mostly do to the extreme lack of money and knowledge. i have to go to work when i get back i will try to check a few things. thanks for all the replys.

use a piece of garden hose, or fuel line in stead then, works pretty good

Where are you in Portland?
If you are not able to figure it out I might be able to help. I know it would suck to not be able to race at the Mopar Nationals.

BTW I won't be there this year, let me know how it goes and what the turnout is like!

The converter bolts are good to check now and then anyway and only take a few minutes. Especially if you have been lighting the tires up!

ok update: duster idiot sent me an e-mail say'n that the water pump could be the issue. i pulled the belt to the water pump and alt. started the car and the noize was still there. i really need some help on this one.

Im not 100% sure if its rod or not. Id start by checking the flexplate bolts and the timing chain as well (especially if she has some miles on her)...

sounds very much like an exhaust gasket leak -or cracked manifold.
the frequency is half engine speed by the sounds and I have heard more than a few engines with exhaust leaks.
not a sharp enough sound for a con rod IMO.
whatever it is- it is cam speed,not crank speed.
here is what I would do to find it.
1. take fan belt off to stop wind interference.and it is quieter.

2. start engine with air cleaner off,and then dribble a little engine oil in the carb throat (enough to make smoke -like you have already done.
spray WD 40 or similar will work too.
3.armed with a mirror (little one) check along underneath the exhaust manifold to head joints.look for black carbon streaks on the head face.

4. if nothing obvious use a flashlight to provide a light beam along the manifold top and bottom.in the dark is best. any smoke you are making will show up.

5. one by one disconnect each spark plug lead and see if there is a change in the noise note. that should isolate which cylinder it is.

do'nt let the car idle too long without the fanbelt coz the waterpump is not working while it is off = overheat.
3 or 4 minutes at idle,if the car is not hot to start with will be fine.

I will lay odds that it is a manifold gasket. if after all the above and still not found - call in the cavalry with some of your local experts.

frist off thanks again for all the replys and phone calls. - sixpar,ceej & joshie u guys rock!

ok i pulled the starter and checked the converter bolts, they where tight.

here a picture of that, the oil spill is from where i leaked some when pouring in the carb to check for smoke:

i am going out and sticking the starter and valve cover back on and pulling plugs to see what cyl is making that noize.

i just did that and it STILL made the noize. i also got a nice shock off one of the plug wires. fun!

any other ideas?

ok i pulled the belt again and used my make shift stethoscope to listen to the timing cover - nothing. next i drained the oil and checked it for metal - nothing. i even took a magnetic tool and probed the oil pan - nothing again. i have looked the exhaust manafold up and down - no cracks,holes or anything else.

I just listened to the video again. Sounds like the motor is running smooth.

Ok, here is a long shot....check between the two manifolds to see if it leaking exhaust out between them. The stove box gasket can blow out and cause this sound.

So can the manifold/pipe joint gasket. Sometimes it will blow toward the engine.

thanks Aggressive Ted! but this i have checked up n down. its inside the motor. i know if one of u guys came up here you woudl say hey its this. und all woudl be good n fixed. all i know is it aint moving 10 feet untill it purrs again.

this is another long shot but i had this happen only once in all the years i have been working on slantsix`s , the flex plate/crank bolts back off just enoungh to make a sound that sounded like a bad bearing or something gone bad in the converter, you could follow the sound through the bottom of the block right to the trans with a cut off broom handle. i only discover it when i pulled the motor thinking i was going to do a motor or trans build :?:
