And would it affect what you pay for it?

I am looking at a car that is a back-half that technically has a title, but it is non-transferrable because a previous owner signed their name on it and never transferred it into their name.

Car will never be registered, it will always be a race car.

I have always shied away from anything w/o a clean title. I know race cars do not need one, only a bill of sale. But.............................

Check with the DMV to see how much $$$ it will take to clean-up the title.
Use that number as a price negotiation point.

I always like to keep a title on all the cars I own, even if they are race cars... I feel that there are more potential buyers for cars with titles then cars with-out.

It depends really. I would tend to offer more for a car with a title in case I did want to make a crazy street car or something else out of it. Funny thing to me there are people that will ask you about a car and when you say "no title" they think it's practically worth nothing

Different states have different policies regarding titles as Im trying to get one for my '70 charger as it was left for dead and was gonna be crushed  Im going through a real act of congress trying to get all the bs sorted out..what a pain  There has gotta be a better way..

I have a '66 barracuda as well didnt have a title when I got it and I guess it never will have. Traded a small guitar amp for it to a friend about 5 years ago.Was a drag car when I got it...

Race car or yard art, I'd hate to have a previous owner show up with the title, cop, and warrant.

When I think of title issues, it reminds me of the story of one of the Shelby Daytona Coupes, CSX2287

You can't get a bill of sale from the guy that signed his name on the title transferring ownership to you?

No. Present owner does not know how many owners back the car is still actually titled to.

So you don't have the actual title then? Got a friend at a tow company or repair shop? A storage or mechanics lien is probably easiest at this point.

Doesn't make any difference, how many back. The only thing you need to know is the last titled owners name and address. That will be on the title. Contact him before putting up any money.

but if the guy has either moved, or is dead... that may not help either... seen that one before... bought a car, the previous owner wrote a bill of sale, and on the bill of sale she promised the spare 8 3/4" rear for the car... I got the car, titled fine be cause she signed it in the right areas (the next couple of owners never transferred it... I stopped by one day to see about the rear end that had never been picked by the last guys according to them.... people at the house had no idea who or waht I wanted... previous owner passed away 3 years previous and her children sold the house....

For the right price I can (didn't say I would) find a rusty shell with a title, section out the trunk gutter, rad support, and plates. Your good to go

Bottom line at this time is that we are so far apart on money it may be a moot point anyway.

This is a deal where the car that was described to me in e-mails, pictures, and over the phone didn't seem to match the car that I saw after riding 3 hours to get there. :x

There is a service in Birmingham AL that can provide you with a legal title.

Broadway title Co. 1-800-464-3222

Bummer. Don't buy it. Too much trouble. Cut your losses. I still insist on a title. If they don't want to go to the trouble, it isn't worth mine.

My father and I have bought and sold race cars for years without titles and never had a problem. We get a Bill of Sale from the person we buy it from or gave a Bill of Sale to the person we sold it too. If there is a concern you can get the VIN # off of the car, go to the DMV and they can search that # to see if there is a issue, like a lean against the # or if that # is tied to a stolen car.

Not in Georgia - I've bought three street vehicles, including the Dart, without a clear title. As long as it's 1985 or older, getting it registered just takes a bill of sale.
