I ran across an article on BigBlockDart.Com (http://www.bigblockdart.com/techpages/abconv.shtml) that said it would show you how to use a long A833 in an A body.

What it actually showed was an adapter to move the shifter mount from the long cone/rear position to a short cone/rear position. A plate steel mount extension.

It seems to me that this would merely make it possible to install a short model linkage on a long model tranny with the shifter half way between the forward mounting position and the rear mounting position on a long cone. I fail to see the great advantage of that. From what I've seen, short A833's are usually missing their linkage - at least on eBay, making them something to seek, not something you want to find uses for. And I don't see how that makes a long A833 fit into an A body better. (Maybe all long A833's fit under A bodies fine?!)

1. Does ANY configuration have a shifter in the forward mount position on the long A833, a position that would appear to work better with a bench seat than a midpoint position?

2. Have I missed the point of this article?

3. Is there any place where A833 linkages are "plentyful?"

Thanks

The transmission mounting pad is also different between the long and short Mopar transmissions.

Save yourself a lot of fabrication work and trouble... get the correct lenght transmission for the chassis you are working with.

rosskinder,

You asked: 1. Does ANY configuration have a shifter in the forward mount position on the long A833, a position that would appear to work better with a bench seat than a midpoint position?

Ans: Yes. I have 2 long model 833 OD's, both with a forward mount for the shifter. Mine are/were in a '64 d100 pickup and the shifter fits nicely in front of the bench seat. The rear mount would not work.

I can't see how the short body would ever work even with a S-shaped shift handle rod because the "throw" from R to 4th is so long the shift handle rod smashes into your dashboard, if not your seat. I made several shifter mounting plates to try angling the shfter body forward and backward to get it to fit the rods I had on hand. Easy enough to do from the forward mount holes, veeeery difficult to do from the rear ones.

As to getting rods, I made a recent post about rods to someone here...just like many things you will find them in the darndest places and at the darnedst times. Worth buying a Hurst Comp Plus with rods if less than $125 in my opinion just to get the rod set, then clean up the shifter and sell it.

Believe me, that is my intention. But finding the tranny I need has been pretty illusive.

Thanks

Lotsa bare-bones, stripped down, non-OD (wrong low gear ratio) trannies around. Everybody seems to strip and throw the goodies away.

Thanks

Actually, the first one I posted is an O.D version according to the info the seller posted.

Are you looking for a complete setup with everything you need to bolt into your car?

I think so. Replacing a 3 speed.

Thanks
