Get them to toss in a new valve....I bet they would like a shot at fixing a problem that is small and easy now......versus later.
Sandy, I love the way you think. Unfortunately, it's been two and a half years since I had the head done and I'm thinkin' the statute of limitations has been exceeded by a bit.

Still trying to figure out what really caused this. I guess we'll just start over from the top with a little more clearance and plain old umbrella seals.

Thanks again Josh.

Just to finish this off. I know it's been a while. I'm easily distracted....

I took the head to the machine shop. He said he did it like every other one, clearance to .001 intake and exhaust. Obviously not what the book says (.002 and .003). Anyway, he fixed it for free (if free is the cost of my labor pulling the head off and replacing it). So far so good. I've run it up and down hills in 1st and 2nd without bending anything.

He did convince me to keep the positive valve seals. Yes, I know, I'm listening to the guy who did it wrong. But, I think that was due to ignorance and not intent. And it didn't take much as I like the idea of the positive seals.

Thanks for the input. Until next time...

Is your machine shop the one in Lawndale on Manhattan Beach Blvd.? They screwed up a motorcycle head and cylinder I had done there with the result that I paid for more work that i needed, and later the motor grenaded.

Good to hear they fixed your problem, though.

I have had good luck with the positive valve stem seals on the intake valve stems but these seals seem to work "to good" on the exhaust valves, by not allowing enough oil into the guide.

On one engine I recently rebuilt, it had the positive seals already installed on all the valves so I punched a small pin hole into each exhaust seal, just to let a little more oil into the valve guide.
That engine runs well and does not "use" oil or smoke at start-up.

Re: location
It's the one on Prairie off of Marine in Lawndale.

Re: oiling
We'll see what happens. It'll either be adequate or it'll be a(nother) learning experience.

Mine was a bit different. I bought it smoking and barely running. A couple of the pusrods were out of their sockets. Others were way loose. I adjusted all of them and replaced the bent one.

Six months go by,.. I sell it. It has been running perfect. Just before delivery I have an urgent situation. A friend is at a light in heavy traffic. Traffic is backed up for a mile. Growing by the minute. I pull in front, throw him a chain, put my tall geared /6 - 3 speed into first. I have a hill to pull, I rev it to about 4000 rpm. and have to slip the clutch. There goes a push rod. We deduct that the pushrods were sooo loose for soo long that they did not mate due to adverse wear. Both the rockers and the push rods had this "non adjusted" wear. Even when adjusted to factory tolerances they would pop out. Gl/6
