Bummer. I have a 225 short block that we can throw rings and bearings into to get Midi's Dart back on the road. I even have the rings and bearings. Will have an oil pump soon too. Oh, and a reground cam and new timing set. Just need lifters, gaskets and Midi's head and valve gear.

Rob or MiDi will be up in a bit to tell you why.

At least the crank can keep time with the radio now.

We'll be rebuilding the engine, unfortunately MiDi's Dart isn't going anywhere soon.

Yo this is THOR on MiDi's compy. From my observations, I think that the thrust bearing on the crank is lunched. The crank shifts back and forth almost a full 1/4", which, in my experience, is far to much. Typically you only want a few thousandths of play.

So thats not good.

It was rather odd that the engine stalled when I lifted up on the intake valves. I cant figure out why though. The Rocker shaft is tight, and the valves are now adjusted correctly. They were way off, like in the .030~ huge range, and were very clackity clackity like.

The engine did have an exhaust leak which I traced to the down pipe gasket.

In the video that he posted, it almost sounds like the engine has a miss, but by doing a power balance test, they are all firing more or less 100%.

I discovered that the crank play was quite extensive as I was pulling the harmonic damper off to inspect the timing set. It is the original set as far as we know, and with almost 150k on the engine, it seemed like a good time to check/replace it anyways.

So the engine is coming out. Ive already removed everything except the motor mount bolts, and one bellhousing bolt (due to the fact that the trans dippy tube is attatched to it, and the engine needs to be lowered away from the firewall to get it out easily.

Its basically ready to be pulled.

MiDi is extremely bummed, as expected, so he is doing the very wise thing and not coming to the races with his truck either.

"What a wonderful day in my neighborhood......." :( :(

Do-nation...

i have a couple of very low miler timing sets, and a Sealed Power CRS-380 stock replacement cam new in the box I can donate to the cause...

That would leave pistons, rings, lifters, machining, I have a couple of forged cranks I would trade one for your core, that way you don't have to pay for a crank kit... just the bearings...

thanks for the awesome offer DI, and thanks to joshie also. the plan is to keep my BH block. Ceej and 71dart are gonna help. the next step is to get the motor pulled and transported to Ceej's down in halsey, a 100 miles away. i have priced both bering kits and a complete engine gasket kit for 150.00 it's gonna be a while before i can afford that! but i already do have some of the gaskets ie; water pump gasket, 2 sets of intake/exhaust manifold gaskets, valve cover gasket.
so the biggest thing i can use is good gaskets. i am just cleaning & painting parts because it's all i can do now and paint is cheap.

this is bad, i'm hella bummed.

MiDi, whatever gaskets you can use that I have sitting at THOR's house are yours. I don't know what's left, you'll have to ask him, but I know that kit came with a lot of gaskets I didn't use.

no josh its totally good! i just have no money to buy it from you.

so that's why i posted that. arrrg! my friend adam is taking me out for pints and stopping me from throwing my self over the hood and crying!

if i had money this would be the time for a long runner intake and duals. and this would be an awesome learing adventure into teaching me this engine! no matter what i am keeping my dart. and will keep working on it and restroing it into what it once was. it's a damn good car and it's the reason i am here. today i lost my best friend the 73 dart!

this totally sucks for me.

Buy? Who said anything about buy? I was going to slap this thing together anyway. Just give it back when you're done with your good engine. Oh, I have a head gasket I forgot to mention. Also have a cam with the lifters that were kept in order by Reed. We should be able to get you on the road in no time.

I'll inventory my leftover gaskets and see where we are. You'll need to come over some evening and I'll show you what a quick-and-dirty is when it comes to engines.

At the risk of going off topic or getting too sentimental I just want to say: this thread really shows the spirit of brotherhood on this board. You guys are awesome the way you pull together to help a guy in need. Kudos to all of you!

When you get all your parts together, give me a call, and we'll open up an engine stand. My three stands are loaded at the moment.

Neil,

After Woodburn I'll work on getting the 225 on the stand back together with new rings and bearings. All I need to put most of it together is a rear main seal set Fel Pro BS40240 which is $14 at Schuck's and is stocked at their big store on 82nd between Powell and Division Streets. I'll see about getting one.
