I looked at the two pumps I got this weekend. One of them has a chipped gear. It really looks like a rather brittle cast gear. It is easy to see how maybe the older OE pumps might have been better material.

I have a NOS 6 hole aluminum pump and the gear just looks different, more like steel than cast iron. I believe this is a late 60s manufacture.

I also have a NOS 5 hole aluminum pump that came out of the factory sealed bag with a chewed gear. It is some sort of machine damage, not shipping damage.

Maybe there were (are) even a few more issues that have helped with the failures?

At least now one can have a pile to choose from!

ha ha man I definitly had a brain fart on that one slantsixdan, do they make steel/bronze dizzy gears ? i managed to snag a "ford style" star pump with the dimples on the cover, they guy couldn't believe the price either !!!

What means a "Ford style" pump?

There used to be iron distributor pinions available — no more. There are bronze ones out of Australia ($$).

I would love to have a right hand drive car BUT i would settle for a right hand drive oil pump! (I still don't like the up-side down filter)

Looking at these oil pumps, I notice that there aren't any tubes coming out of the pump that go up inside the oil filter. Are these tubes not nessessary? Also, only 5 holes for mounting? My block has 6 holes and the gasket looks like it's set up for 6 but the pump only has 5? My brain is starting to hurt...

I am organizing a shipment to Dan -

The BAD thing with these setups is the filter on top of the tappet cover - the good thing is that it is easy to relocate - I my Case to the front next to my oil cooler in a nice easy to access and logical no mess possition

The right hand drive SL6 pumps are pretty cool if you need to run oil lines off to a remote filter / oil cooler.

I do not like the factory 'elbow fittings' most come with because they are restrictive. Come off the pump with straight fittings or do some "porting work" on the factory ones to reduce the restriction.

That's RSA-only. The Australians used various other locations:

RV1 (1961 Valiants sold as 1962 models down there): Replaceable-element oil filter cannister mounted to RH inner fender more or less right above the oil pump

SV1 (1962): Replaceable-element oil filter cannister mounted to upper water pump bolts (where the A/C compressor mounts if a slant-6 is so equipped)

AP5-VF (1963-1970): Spin-on oil filter mounted on filter pad bolted to manifold side of block, just above oil pan rail, just behind water pump scroll housing, with form-bent hardlines running around the front and rear of the engine.

Any of these makes for much easier, less-messy oil filter changes than either the USA or RSA setups.

oil pumps with powder metal drive gears are pure junk; the gears slip on shaft,they have a VERY lame knurl like spine under them; China? You can't press on powder metal gears. JUNK! Guess how i know.. Gear spins free, zero oilpressure

Has anyone seen a slant six with an oil pump that has an aluminum housing?? I have one from my 198 but dont ever recall seeing another one ???
