Yesterday just out of curiosity I thought I would stick a meter on the battery and check the charging rate.

So engine off..multimeter on the battery...12.8v good!

Started the engine and bought it up to approx 2K rpm.

watched the voltage go up....and up.....and up....and up....
topping out at 17.8 volts.....!!!!

Its a wonder the battery didn't boil dry on the trip home.

Pulled off the voltage regulator and it looked very new and shiny. Cover and internals. (points style). Field terminal and earthing looked good but ign terminal was rusty.

Cleaned the ign terminal up and and the plug and refitted and fired it up...Voltage still the same....high..climbing to 17.8 volts at which point it would start regulating.

I spent a bit of time bending the spring mounting anchor and have pegged it back to 14.4 volts at highish rpm. Battery states that 14.8v is the maximum charging voltage so I think I am good to go!

I think I'll stick a multimeter in the cigarette socket for a few drives before I get some confidence up but its looking good!
