Ive been workin on gettin a new water pump on my car for the past couple days, mainly due to time constraints. I got it on the wasnt able to get the a/c pump lined up with its mounting rods.... looks like some one welded some tabs on the end of two rods (one for top and bottom) and now nothing lines up. I decided to put everything back together with the bolts from my spare motor, but now am worried. During the cold season, I need the defroster to work for visibility before and while driving. If I scratch the a/c will this take my defroster? I dont care at all if I have a/c, in fact right now the truck I drive needs the heater on high to keep from running too hot. Please help, I wanna get this thing runnin again

A/C and defrost are two different systems. Most likely you will not disable your defrost by removing the A/C compressor. Have you tried attaching the compressor using the water pump bolts (should be the three in the upper right of the pump as you face it) and then figuring out the brackets from there?

I did consider that, but I dont want to put some kind of kinke in the geometry of the belt and have it premeturely ware or spit belts due to it.

On pre-'74 A-bodies, true. On just about everything else we work with on this board, not true.

Yes the controls ae the same, but remving the A/C compressor and hoses will not disable the defrost system. It will just render some of the buttons on the dash useless.

Sure air will come out of the defroster vent but I think what you are concerned about is how it will effect the actual defrosting of your glass, right?
I think the reason why the A/C is linked to the defrost is to dry out the air that is blowing on your windshield. I've driven cars with no compressor and rarely ran into any defrosting issues but here in the wet/cold MN winters I think that having the compressor working helps.

Never said the system would work with 100% efficiency, but it will still work.

That still depends on the year. I was surprised to find out that the defroster does not run the air thru the evaporator first on our 71 Swinger. The way the boxes are made there is no way for this to happen.

The original switch did not turn on the compressor in defrost either. The replacement switch I bought does turn on the compressor in defrost. Since I have not been able to find an earlier version I will likely add a micro switch to turn it off in defrost mode.

So if you have an older A body it should not make any difference.
