Hi, i'am new here to this form. I've been working on my first slant six for about a year now. Its a 1982 D-150, and so far I love it. But I have a problem that I just cant fix. I have to push the gas paddle down to the floor to get any speed but it won't go over 55 mph. I've put a new timing chain, carb, distributor. Also I've replaced the spark plugs and plug wires and rotor button three times now. I took the EGR system out by takeing my intake and exhaust maniflod off and putting one from a 1970 d-100 and plugging everything the EGR was conected to. Its also a manual transmission, I also replaced the clutch. I need all the help I can get on why my slant 6 want go over 55 MPH and my foot is on the floor. It will crank right up and idle a little rough.

first thing that comes to mind is check and see if the throttle is opening the carb all the way when the pedal is fully depressed. could need adjusting.

as far as the egr removal, takeing a couple pics of your engine bay and posting them may get you some better responses. if anything isnt kosher, someone will spot it quick.

the rough idle could be anything. make sure your plugs are gapped correctly. (.035) check your timing. should be a label on the passenger side inner fender telling you what it is. (alot of these trucks were different for what ever reasons) but w/ the EGR system removed the stickers call out may be a moot point. i'm not sure. check for a vacuum leak. change the fuel filter, check the pcv valve and hose. etc. do a compression test and a leak down test also.

do you have a haynes or chiltons manual for your truck? if not that should be your very next purchase. i'm not trying to name off things that may or may not be obvious to you, just some things that were'nt mentioned. hope something in this helps... good luck.

Sorry, but I have to dissagree with that. Don't waste your money on those manuals. Get a Factory Service manual.

As for the poor running, I would start by using an insulated spark plug wire pliers, and remove one wire at a time, while the engine is running, to see, if any cylinders are not fireing. As you remove the wires, the rpm will change if that cyl is fireing. If no rpm change, that cyl is dead. Then go from there.

Actually, I would start by making sure the wires are going to the correct plugs.

what ignition system are you using for your '82 van?

The original would be the ESC system, if you changed the distributor to a pre-1980 and still are using the ESC computer... it's not going to work so good... if you have retrofitted to the pre-1980 EI system, but are using the stock 1982 van distributor... your timing will be static and not riun as well...

???

I've already replaced the pcv valve, vacum lines, the coil, fuel pump, fuel filter. The first thing i did buy was a manule. My timing is 12 degrees. The spark plugs are gap right (0.35). I'am going to replace my throttle cable, I hope that works.
