would there be anyway to have a sticky listing ppl's engine combo's, in what cars with 1/4 or 1/8 mile times and how drivable the car is for daily use? Reason I ask is you see a lot of questions about what cam to use? what to expect? Turbo or NOS?.. I want my 72 wagon to run 9's and still get 20 mpg's on my minimum wage budget, what do I do? etc etc.

now I find myself there. I have an idea of what i want, also what I'm willing to settle for but am unsure of the most cost effective, easiest, most reliable way to approach it. I'll post my questions for my truck in another thread. But thought a generalized location for this kind of information would be nice. So what do you guys think??

Here's a start with some times anyway. Engine combinations have been posted all over the engine section. Just dig around a little. :D

9's in the 1/8 mile? I run high-mid 10's in the 1/8 with a 17second car overall. I don't know many hemi cars that run 9's in the quarter and still idle....
Overall read through twiggy and engine matrix and get a combo that is a 15 second car. It may not quite get 20mpg so you'll have to balance that out. But for starters it's going to take rear gearing, cam, compression and carb.

I agree, you'll even need a low 15 sec car to comfortably be in the 9's for the 1/8. My old Valiant has run into the 9's only just a couple of times, and that's doing 15.5 on the 1/4 mile. My engine and trans are extremely streetable (see link in my sig) but to do mid 15's I used a locked 3.7 diff which throws the streetabilty out the window in my opinion. I'm now using an open centre 2.92 diff, much nicer on the street and will still run low 16's.
At the end of the day it's all a balancing act between power and economy, unfortunately you may have to sacrifice some of one for the other.

i apologize, ya'll misunderstood me, i don't have a 72 wagon, 9's in the 1/4 is what i meant, it was a joke..... very large car.... not quite a rhetorical question... but ... well.... anyways it was a fake question.

I just thought since so many ppl have gone after similar goals, that a centralized place to put the results of different combos could help ppl put together a feasible plan, or at least give them an idea of how much would be involved to accomplish what their after, without searching all over the web and different posts for a week.

a guy wanting to beat his neighbors 5.0 lx could look at different combos to see what it would take, or a kid w/ only $800 dollars could look and see where his money would best be spent, without having to ask as many questions. Tried and true projects already proven to work or combos that failed to meet the mark. it was just an idea, no biggie.

I DO APPRECIATE THE RESPONSES THOUGH, they are actually combos i'd like to look at. i'll post another thread on my truck and my questions titled, well.. "my truck and my questions" thanks to your responses so far, they're teaching me more, and i'm grateful. the idea for this thread is more for "the next guy" thanks again for your time and consideration.

SV162,

Have you thought of getting a high stall converter and running ~3.00 gears? That will likely do better than 3.7s and a stock converter. 2800-3000 stall will still be very streetable.

With a car that launches hard (converter), you should be able to run 15 flat in the 1/4 if you run 9.50 in the 1/8th.

Lou

The converter that I'm using has a bit more stall than stock, it's around 2500rpm. I've talked with my engine builder about this before. He said after driving the car one day......."you know, we could have gone higher on the stall, it's just too damn streetable" So it will probably get a higher stall one day. I will most likely be putting in 3.23 gears which will help a bit also.
I must say that the 3.7's seem to be a good ratio for this car on the 1/4 mile. It crosses the line at 5000rpm in top gear, which is when the power just starts to drop off.

I agree that 3.7 is a nice 1/4 mile gear, but not good for hwy driving. 3000 stall will give you more fun factor at very little difference in driveability.
