My truck had sat neglected for 12 years, then I bought her and have her operating respectably again. Now I'd like a little more oomph. She looks the part, so I'd like to be able to back it up, a little at least.

I bought an Offy 2x1 intake, that w/ either dutra duals, or 3 into 1 shorty headers running into a pair of 40 series flowmasters, an erson 270 duration cam or equivalent, along w/ oversize valves, shaving .100 off the head and some mild porting, are what I have in mind. But I'm not sure if I will be disappointed or not, after all that work and money spent. Maybe I should be reading and learning about turbo's.

As far as the trans, it has a 727 that was rebuilt 7000 miles ago (found a receipt in the glovebox) I'm not sure if it had a shift kit or higher than stock stall converter or not. The 1-2 shift is solid, and I dont have a tach as of yet. I'm gonna have to track down the previous owners on some things like that.

As for the rear its an 8 1/4 open diff. When I jacked up the rear and chocked the front tires, I got under it and spun the drive shaft, it rotated around 1.85 to 1.9 turns to turn the rear wheel once. I must be missing something because the truck feels like it has 3:23 or 2:94 gears to me. And I've never heard of stock gears so high. I believe I'm doing something wrong but have done this several times and am sure of the count. The rear tire is 27 inches tall.

Thats all the info I can think of at the time, what I'd like is a solid truck, low to mid 14's hopefully. I dont know what she'll do now w/ the stock 1bbl motor so anything would be an improvement, and I could do the above mods while i study up on turbo's I guess, I just want some opinions and an idea of what to expect. thank you all for your time and consideration.
Dietz

If only 1 rear wheel spun, double it................. (3.7-3.8)

Low to mid 14s in a pickup with a normally aspirated slant is going to be tough. A mid 14 second normally aspirated A-body isn't difficult, but it requires everything you've outlined, but usually more cam, compression and a high stall torque converter. If you want a streetable 14 second slant six you should be reading about turbocharging or supercharging and EFI. A mildly warmed up 440 would also do.

I would expect your truck to have 3.55 gears. The most sure way to tell is pull the differential cover and see what's stamped on the ring gear. There should also be a tag under the hood that calls out options like brakes, trans, axles, etc.

thanks emsvitil and joshie, yes the broadcast sheet is under the hood but only partially readable. gives the rear as R/A 8 3/8 (which is the 8 1/4) and 4030611 is used, but I've been unable to decode that. I cant read the rest. as for the warmed over 440, I know a swap would be easy power, but I want to keep the six. My original plan was a 383 when I bought it, now that I have it up and running, and have been driving it, my desires have changed.
I like my slant six.

So with that in mind, if I did the above mods what #'s could I expect (HP and TQ) I can enter that into a program to get an estimate once I find out my vehicles true weight. The weight call out inside the door is also unreadable. only the GVW is stamped. the others were printed on the metal and have since, faded.

I was also figuring on a 3000 stall converter, unless the general consensus here recommends otherwise. I am thinking of doing the above mods first, for the pick me up I'd like while buying some books on turbo's and getting a plan together for later. Or just adding the intake and headers for now. I'm not sure which way to go yet.

thanks for the great input guys, I appreciate it!!

I think it will run a 9 sec 1/4 mile dietz................

Seriously though, the truck looks heavy, she's gonna need some hp to get in the 14's.

Here's a video to help get you motivated, not a Slant 6 but still a fast truck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPU5oLWuWM8

Well now i know my expectations were a bit high with that combo, and I believe that is about as high perf a build as i should go with a daily driver without going with boost.

I'm still gonna do the above mentioned mods for the time being and be looking into which way to go with a turbo set up. THAT will be a new world to me. I have no experience with them and have read very little about them on top of that.

Any advice on either is more than welcome. Also thanks again for all the helpful input.

The rear end should have ( unless its been removed ) a small metal tag undeneath one of the inspection cover bolts that has the gear ratio stamped on to it. My 82 D150 has a 3:55 and my parts truck 87 D150 has a 3:21 ratio. My mother-in-laws 84 D150 has a 2:94 gearset-all of these trucks have tags on the covers.
Good Luck,
Todd

Thanks Todd, I looked for the tag, but it looked cut off, unless you have to take the bolt out to uncover the numbers. I'm pretty sure its a 3:55 though. Thank you.

How much does your truck weigh?

You may want to use Hooker headers which are longer and will produce more torque for good driveability and better mileage.

There are two schools of thought, build a high rpm screamer, or build a torque monger.

I built a torque monger due to my Dart being heavy, 3600 pounds with me in it and a full tank of gas. My gear ratio is also on the tall side, 2.76. So to have good performance I have spent my efforts on ways to create torque, not high end HP. Performance and driveability is real good and so is the mileage. I have a very spunky and peppy engine.

Look under engine builds using the search function for my setup. Doc made the suggestions and I followed them very closely. I am happy to report after 40,000 miles it is very, very good for a daily driver and allot of fun to drive. :D
It will jump up to 90 mph from 60 mph in a heart beat.

thanks for the PM Ted. looks like my trucks weight is 3800 lbs give or take. I need to haul something to the dump for someone and get a true weight w/ me in it.

I do believe your right. Torque would be the way to go for me. Thanks for the advice on the headers and the info on your build. I appreciate it. I'll get back w/ you on any questions.

Same here go for torque - better fuel consumption as a rule if you can keep your foot in check.....
