My fuel gauge doesn't work on my '65 Valiant. I did see it move one time few months back. Doing maintenance on the rear end i noticed the strap crossing the rubber fuel section of the fuel line at the sending unit wasn't hooked up. Viewing posts here trying to find it's purpose i found that it may be my problem. I saw one post on this forum where it tied into the sending unit above the sensor connection. I can only assume my clip or whatever it was plugged into has rusted away. It looks similar for instance to the water or oil sending unit connections so evidently there was a grounding clip to plug into at the sending unit.
I am wondering if it has to be grounded at the sending unit facing or can i just ground it somewhere on the tank or its straps? Any suggestions appreciated!

This grounding clip is still available at the dealer under the original part number, 2258 862.

You can run a ground wire, say #16 gage, from the crimped seam at the rear corner of the tank to the frame.

I did this mod to my first Dart in 1973, and again on my present Dart this spring. The clip that Dan refers to may or may not work as it relies on the metal fuel line and metal clips holding the fuel line to the frame rail to provide a good path to ground. Years of corrosion, and road dirt can compromise a good electrical path to ground using the factory method. In this case two ground paths are better than one.

You can get away with grounding the sender, by using a small hose clamp on the outlet', then screwing it to the frame like in the previous pictures.

Screwing a ground to the tank will not help the sending unit since the gasket isolates it from the rest of the tank (and dirt and rust...).
