Anyone have a good brand of grease or brake grease to us on brakes? I usually just use the kind that come in the little packets, but I am upgrading my brake system so I need a lot of it. Any specific brand or type that is reccomended?

I use the high pressure moly stuff when I pack my bearings when installing disc brakes.

Are you refereing to the anti squeal lube one applies to metal tabs common to disk brake pads that is included with some new pads?

I think this substance is just high temp. silicon grease. It comes in little tubes, and is carried by any auto parts store.

There's a synthetic hi-temp grease to use on brakes.

It has brake in it's name, so should be easy to find.

Got a tube decades ago, lasts forever.


I've used it on disk brakes (pins and sliding contacts) and drums (adjuster screws, shoe tabs)

i use Sta-Lube Synthetic Brake Grease. black in color and can be had at napa in a tube (4oz?) or a 16oz(?) tub with a brush. i use it on every contact point in the brakes. never had a squeak and seems to stay put in wet weather.

Also don't forget to use the anti-squeel adhesive (not lube) where the
pads contact the caliper piston face... that helps quite a bit in the 'stocker' rebuild... if you decided on an aggressive brake pad, the squeel may still occur though....

I definitely won't forget that. I think i'll just use the organic pads that come with the rebuilt calipers.

if its a floating pin type caliper I use dielectric grease on the rubber bushings and anti seize between the caliper and mounting bracket. most pads come with an anti squeek coating on the backs already.

toyota recommends a pink silicone-based grease that will not harm the rubber seals in your brake system: toyota P/N 08887-01206 use this grease on the spring post of your brake backing plate, as well as the two or three slide bosses for each of your brake shoes. on calipers, use it on the caliper slides. 100G tube, available at any toyota parts counter.
navistar (international) also has a formulation safe for caliper slides, it is the consistency and look of caramel and it has excellent water washout resistance. available at any truck center, D7AZ-19590-A (ESA-M1C172-A) 450G plastic tub. apply both greases with your finger or an acid brush. i have used both greases and can vouch for their effectiveness.

If it is the much more common "sliding" caliper not the pin type, I don't like to use grease of any kind on these. I have seen way to many problems with "road grit" attaching itself to the grease and sticking the caliper. I prefer to use a dry molly spray that will not attract road grit.

Brake squeal is caused by vibration between the pads and rotors. Anything that cuts down on this vibration will cut down or stop the squeal. The best preventative for squeal is a good straight freshly turned rotor. I commonly install high quality brake pads without any squeal goo and never have a problem.
