Well today at Wysco they are having a meeting of the "higher ups" and the slant six header will be a topic. If it isn't commerically viable, Joseph ( low level contact) told me that they have done "private label" runs of headers for people. We need to figure out the optimum lenght of header that will suit the slant community and pray for them to want to produce them. So what header configuration do we want?

I'll take just about anything that would fit a 63-66 Valiant for a street configuration.

Before you commit to anything, find out what a production run consists of, and a ballpark price. Custom run headers can get quite pricey.

Roger, there is a thread now about header flanges on the Bag. I bought a set of mild steel ones for $38 shipped. They are quite nice. :D

Something longer than a Clifford shorties that will create some torque and fit in a 74 with power steering and not as expensive or as long as the Hookers.

The king of Slant 6 horsepower in Oz (370 HP NA and 630 HP turbo'ed) has said multiple times that 30-34" primary pipes (3X2) make best torque and HP with a NA motor. He has done multiple dyno tests with different motor combos.

I would think 30" primary 3X2 headers should be what we shoot for, slung close to the block like the Clifford shorties (about 20" primaries), and exiting just above/forward of the draglink on an A-body. Not too extreme bends coming out of the head ports for best transition efficiency.

I or someone else could sketch some pictures and send pics of existing headers. Almost all the long tube headers are too long and bulky and hang low, and the shorties are quite a bit too short but fit nicely.

IIRC, the older Clifford long tubes for 60-66 A-bodies are almost right, but primaries are a bit too long. They are the ones where all 6 tubes come together right above the pan rail and swoop downward together.

Lou

Thanks again,

Lou

while were on the topic why not a turbo header ? maybe a weld up kit for the slant, at least you could make it fit whatever you threw at it !!

Because I would like one that lasts more than a year! The pipe used for headers is no where near heavy enough to take the heat of a turbo engine.

I haven't built mine yet but I ordered a box full of schedule 40 els to cut and paste together. It should handle the heat and stress that a turbo will put on the manifold much better than 16 or 18 gauge headers will.

Thats why factory turbo cars have cast iron turbo headers, and why the after market uses stainless steel ;)

What would happen if you made a header of mild steel, then made a mold around it; then pored cast iron around the mild steel headers...........

You get the flow characteristics you want from the mild steel, and then the cast iron can handle the heat.........

Is this even feasible?

Emsvitil,
I like the way you think, but I think you'd wind up with lamination issues as both metals should have different expansion characteristics. Might be difficult to cast in the first place since cast iron shrinks when it cools.

Go to library, the have books on metal casting. cast iron shrinks a little, thats why you build the mold bigger than the final product to allow for shrink. Besides cast weighs a ton compared to a nice stainless steel header :D
