I called the machine shop today, they're cleaning and magnafluxing the head and are still in the cleaning step for the block.

Apparently the head is cracked in 3 places, and fixable, but they told me it would be cheaper to just find another in better shape.
Theres a wrecking yard down the street from my house that has lots of SL6 heads to choose from.
What is the best year for slant six heads?

If you like the drool tube head then 1968 to 1974 is your pick... preferably 1972-1974 if you want hardened seats (hope they don't grind them away when redoing the valves).

If you don't mind using the chevy/BL plugs then 1975-1980 is Ok to, no drool tubes, but you may need to plug the smog port if you find a '447' head with the hole at the back ofthe head.

good hunting.
