Why not 2 1/2 pipes? I was thinking about going 2 1/2 back to the muffler and 2 1/4 dual outs.

I haven't had any problems with mine.

But I wouldn't recommend the gasless MIGs. Welds are much cleaner (no slag) with at least CO2.

Bigger is not necessarily always better. You want to keep the exhaust velocity up at the head of the system; too large a pipe spoils that. Besides, the manifold outlet is 2". You can hone it a little to 2 and a fraction, but 2½" is going to make it basically impossible to seal the headpipe flange to the manifold outlet.

So Dan, Is 2" the right way to go or 2 1/4"?? It would seem that to keep it simple (the old KISS works for me) would be to go with 2" or is that too constrictive? I don't want to start a raging debate here on size!!

There's no reason to use 2" or 2½" instead of 2¼", which is a known-good size from every perspective (function, fit, etc.).

I guess I'm confused about the exhaust outlet being 2" working with 2 1/4" pipe??

It works fine (the factory did it that way starting in '76).

Dan, I'm sorry, you're going to have to walk me through this. You've got a 2" hole in the exhaust outlet, how do you stuff a 2 1/4" pipe in there??
Pictures might help. Once I get the concept I'm fine, but until then.....

You don't.


The exhaust diameter steps up to 2.25" at the exhaust flange that's flush against the exhaust manifold.

Hey, I'm doing that tomorrow (going from 2" to 2.25")!

Whats the best muffler for a nice deep sound, but its still pretty loud? I was thinking a flowmaster 40 series.
