I picked up a replacement voltage regulator as my fuel and temp gauges haven't been working right (fuel reads ¾ full when it's topped up, Temp always reads way low). I wrestled it in and when I turned on the key, the gauges both went all the way and beyond the max. I wonder if they gave me the wrong one. The brand is Niehoff (seems to be the brand you get up here for electrical components). The part number on the box is UN33871. Is this the right one? Did I do something wrong when I installed it? I pulled it and replaced it with the old one so I don't wreck my gauges, but not knowing how much is in the tank gets old in a hurry. Any thoughts?

Did you try it out with the instrument cluster fully reinstalled in the dash? Remember the regulator won't work correctly if it's poorly grounded (or not grounded at all), and the cluster gets its ground via one of the mounting screws. If indeed you got a defective new regulator, you may want to get one of these instead.

I did the entire swap with the gauge cluster installed in the dash. What does it ground to?

I brought the regulator back to the parts store and exchanged it. Installed the new one and Voila! working gas gauge. I have an additional question though... You stressed grounding the unit in your post. I notice this regulator has an extra "spade" on the back of the unit (facing firewall) I wonder if it would be a good idea to run a wire from it to ground. Any thoughts?
