Because the '64 d100 is my favorite Swepty I have looked at an awful lot of them since '64. Plain janes and US gov't ones I have owned and others I have seen usually have A745's unless there was a special order.

Still all it takes is one mistake to make a unique item, and in this case it seems a lot more probable that the plate was wrong and you ought to believe what you can put your hand on on your truck. I have swapped 4 speeds and automatics into these trucks and you are correct in all the stuff you list that has to be changed, VERRRY noticeable compared to a 3 speed installation.

Do you still have in use the original brake master cylinders, including the one for the clutch slave? (I do but have rebuilt them several times over the years, so I know they last) Do they look equally as aged , suggesting both came with the truck or were changed together, further suggesting the slave and 3 speed came with the truck? Do you have the factory slave brake line with the perfect circle of line above the slave to take up hydraulic hammer or do you have a line obviously added later that will look like brake lines we all add when we replace a line? Is the color of paint on the firewall under the clutch master cyl new compared to the color of the rest of the firewall? If so a clutch master likely came with the truck and a 3 speed did too.

I think the most likely scenario is the guy manning the plate stamper either wasn't paying attention or was in the middle of a journey to the centre of the mind — some of the build plants had a lot of drugs flowing through them — and stamped the wrong thing in that one field on the plate.

That is one heck of a sharp truck! I've always liked that series. Looks very original. Low-mount direct-drive starter and everything! The invisible oil cap is definitely not stock, though

I actually have seen that scenario twice in the past, there was a '64 that was stamped like yours but was column shifted 3 speed (due to the age and grime it had to either be factory or someone swapped for a 3 decades back... The other one was all messed up not only did it have the stamps a 3 instead of 4 speed, but the plate said 3.91, and when we pulled the pig it was stamped 3.5-.

This wouldn't be the first time Ma Mopar had an assembly error.

Ahh, thanks guys. That sounds a lot more feasible than what I’ve been hearing. For some reason most people want to believe that the someone wanted a 3 speed truck and the dealer just switched parts with another new truck on the lot. It may be possible but it sounds like a lot of work when they could just switch trucks - and I can’t find any evidence of it.


Yeah, those pictures were taken when I was putting the BBS back together - about 30 minutes before I decided to upgrade to a super six and 15 minutes before I took the manifolds off. They’re still off - I need to get back on it.

That didn't happen. Occam's Razor applies here: in the absence of evidence otherwise, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

Red slant-6s in trucks for '61-'62. Yellow for '63-'68. Turquoise for '69. Blue for '70-'83ish. Black from '83ish up.

Probably bad photography. It’s definitely yellow. It’s faded a lot and much more pale than it should be.

The tame apes I paid to remove my 833a , to do a rebuild on, dented the drive shaft and knocked the rear weight off. I spot welded the weight back on, to move it to the drive line shop. They said that the shaft was 1 1/2 inches too short !! It was as old and crusty as you would expect on an '82, so I believed it to be factory.
I bumped into an old guy with a D150 parts truck and was mentioning the drive shaft. It turns out he was a service manager for a Mopar agency in those years and he related that many of the trucks came with the wrong drive shaft ! It was 1 1/2 inches too short! They were all to be replaced by Crysler. I picked up a used shaft and had it turned and balanced. It made all the difference in the world!! So, the factory doesn't always get it right!
