I have a 74 duster /6 3spd on the floor I would like to go to a 4 spd. How hard is it and what do I need to do?

You will just need the tranny, bellhousing, shifter and linkage... and you are good to go with a Floor shift '74.... so that does open the easy possibilities for getting a 1975-1980 A-833OD and putting it under there and then getting a 'fun ratio' to drive with...

Now hopefully it's not a 3spd automatic floor shift... that will take a fair bit of work to make the conversion...

You have the easiest car to convert since you already have a floor shift car. You need the 4-speed, it's shifter with linkage, the driveshaft yoke if the spline count is different and a bellhousing if you have the 3-speed only bellhousing now.

I did this swap in my own '74 Duster around 1990 when this stuff was still cheap and needed everything I listed.

How will I know if I have a 3 spd only bellhousing?

Ceej posted some pics from my garage a while back lining out some bellhousing differences. The 3 spd only bell has one bolt pattern and the 3 spd will be using it, the 4 speed bell will have a second set of threaded bolt holes that are wider, 1974 is a purpose built year...slant six with 3 spd typically got the 3 speed bell as a cost saving measure...I don't think the straight 4 speed was available as an option behind the six, yet...

P.S. if you do have a floor shift A-230, that is a 'good' 3 speed tranny which someone might want to upgrade their A-745/903 crunch box with....FYI

So if I crawl under my Duster and look at the bell housing even with the 3 spd bolted up I will still see the bolt pattern for a 4spd right?

You almost have enough to switch, since you have the 3 spd on the floor.
You will need a 225 4 spd bellhousing (check the bearing retainer size for OD or non OD bellhousing fitment). You won't need the 318 bell, 318 z-bar, you will need a 4 spd shifter/shift rods/shift 'handle', and a matching driveline yoke (you can check the splines on the back of the tranny- 25 or 26 splines, you can use a 3 spd or an A904 auto tranny yoke, 29/30 splines and it's a standard A-833 or A-727 auto yoke).

My crunch box 3 speed yoke did not fit the 833OD out put. Luckily I had a driveshaft from my 74 Doooster!
