im looking to get more power from my slant 6, but at the same time i want to still make it pass smog. any info would be great thanks!

Need more info, please. Which smog check program (what state) do you have to pass? Does the car presently have a 1bbl or a 2bbl carburetor? Was it originally equipped with a catalytic converter, and is it still?

this is the california smog test. it has a 1bbl carb and it was and still is equipped with a catalytic converter. thanks.

All the emissions equipment must stay in place and the vehicle will have to pass the sniffer test.
A good tune-up including valve adjustment and distributor recurving is about all you can do.

You may want to check the rear end gear ratio, swapping to a lower rear gear will not impact smog but will make the car more "peppy" to drive.

You may be able to get away with bypassing the OSAC valve and disabling but leaving in place the EGR valve. Maybe flipping the valve and plugging the hose with some RTV sealant and then plugging it into the EGR valve.

Otherwise, the above mentioned exhaust mods are a great idea. You could also install a Super Six and leave all the smog stuff in place. :?

RTV sealant would not be necessary if the valve were flipped, but if the valve's function is tested, this mod will be revealed.

Might be tough to get this past smog...remember, the VIN engine code is different for a 1bbl slant-6 (C) vs. 2bbl slant-6 (D), and in California, they check!

this is all great info to know and thanks to you all. i think i will try to find and install a super six set up and every 2 years i have to pass smog i will replace it with the stock intake. or just leave it and pay the smog guy a little extra to overlook it ,if you know what i mean, it might be a bit costly to be buying gaskets and stuff, but i can deal with it. thanks for the info guys. if you have anymore suggestions let me know i am still open to anything. thanks.

I also live in the land of CA, and have to deal with this crap too. Why did they have to change the laws... I was so looking forward to 2007 when my 1977 would have fallen under the 30 year exemption rule. Now, anything 1976 and newer still has to pass the test.

Anyway.... back to my post.

More than likely if you try to bypass the OSAC valve, you will fail the visual. When I got the car from my dad and brought it to CA, the hose for the OSAC valve was missing. I wasn't aware that there was a hose missing until I failed the first smog test. I explained to the tech that I just got the car, and he was very helpful in explaining to me some of the things that were missing that i would need to replace before it would pass. (Legally he wasn't supposed to do that, but I'm glad he did.)

There are some things that you can do in CA, you just have to really understand the laws and have to jump through a lot of red tape to do it. You can legally perform an engine swap, as long as the engine you put into the car comes from a car that is the same year model or newer. When you make the swap, you have to ensure that all the smog equipment from the car receiving the engine and the smog equipment from the car the engine is coming from is operable. Once you perform the swap, you then have to take the car to and get the swap certified by the California Air Resource Board. Once the swap has been certified as legal, your car will receive a new smog inspection sticker that informs any future technician of what was legally done to your car so that, and how it needs to be tested to pass the smog test.

For example, I could swap in the 1978 318 V8 from an M-body into my 1977. All the smog stuff (including the LeanBurn) would have to be moved over, then inspected, and then my car would be smogged as a 1978 318 (instead of a 1977 /6).

You could, in theory, swap in a 5.7L 3G Hemi into your car, but it would require all the smog equipment (computers,senors, etc) to be swapped in from the donor (Ram, Charger, 300, Magnum), to be operational, and to still have your smog equipment on the Aspen be operational as well.

Based on this, in theory you should be able to swap on a Super-6 setup. But you would have to get it certified. But from what I remember reading, the Super-6 wasn't available in California. This is where it becomes important as to what state your car was sold in. My understanding of the law (but I would still check yourself if you are considering this) is that you wouldn't be able to swap a non-CA engine into a CA car. Since mine is a non-CA car (federal emissions), the rules are different.

Essentially the laws are written so that any change you make, the car will not emit more smog than it was designed to omit.

77partywagon-reading your post- could you put a older than 76 engine in and be exempt? I don't know the particulars of smog laws- Just a thought

Dan is correct. The engine, no matter even if it is a technically superior engine, must always be at least the same year or newer than then car you are installing it in.

so basically what your saying is i can add a super 6 set up, get it checked and if i am lucky i can make it pass smog. i never thought about it that way. thanks for the info.
