Started to port my heads yesterday- 1 of the bits got a little loose so I didnt get to finish.
Started on the intakes, going to do the exhaust today:

Still need to smooth it out some, single cut burr will do nicely:

Things were going along to smoothly, I should've known something was about to go wrong lol.

That looks great.
Wonderful detail in the metal dust, too! :D

Hey stone looks good. what did you use for a template on the int/exh openings? I want to start mine as soon as the weather permits me to spend more than about 5 minutes in the non-heated garage at a time.

best template for the int/exh openings is the gasket, this is called "port-matching".

Well, yes and no. Step is right for the slant six the best idea would be to use the stock gasket that way you should have them all even and open them up. I don't think the slant six needs a lot of opening as far as making a whole new runner cross section. However, if you wanted to you could carefully trim out the new design on the gasket and and cut it than scripe it onto the head. With the small blocks that's what we did, but probably cause we did it a little cheaper and I never got into templates. The big thing for the slant I would assume is to get even runners and smooth exhausts. Even runners would help keep fuel distrubution better therefore tuning better? Any ideas opinions? All in all looks good.

What did you do for the chambers? Dang you went to town on the runners, the "squares" are much bigger I'm impressed.

i took it for granted that the gasket would be for the stock manifold setup. if using a new design intake or exhaust mfld, the ports would be best matched to that combination, and the gasket would be the easiest way to transfer the port shape to the head for matching purposes.

Thanks, this is my first attempt at porting anything other then a Vespa cylinder.

Thanks to some helpful tips from the D to the O to the C its going well (taking more than 2 hours though)

Dizzy, as Step said, I used an intake/exhaust gasket as a template that I ordered from GPRS. Runvs, the ports on this gasket are quit a bit larger than the stock one.
So, as it turns out I will be opening up the intake manifold runners as well :)

I laid the gasket on, positioned it up high, scribed a line at the top of the opening at either end then lined up a straight edge and scribed that to keep it all straight. For the sides I just scribed along the edges of the gasket. The burr I was using had the same radius as the gasket for the corners.

I basically am just eyeballing everything so it stays uniform-also trying to get some bit of a swirl action on the intake so I get the mixture towards the exhaust side.

Oh yeah, knocked down that "ski bump" a bitgoing to the valve stem.

I cant wait- Ima finish it tomorrow and I'll post more pics.

:D

I'd be interested in a play by play too. I've been told this is something I can do myself, but I still have my doubts. Can you please specify what tools you're using for this? Are you going from a guide available somewhere? I'm very interested in seeing what happens with this. Thanks for sharing!

I used this guide. My car runs great now, with new cam and super six. http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.aspx

Here is how it all began-
Image
Notice the perimeter of the valve opening-
Heres how it ended up
Image

Here the GPRS gasket is laid over a stock gasket so you can see what was taken out
Image

Now just the GPRS gasket
Image

The exhaust needs more smoothing but I'm going to wait till after the valve seats are in to massage it a little more
Image

Basically I just wanted everything somewhat uniform I took about .125" off the floor- DOC showed me the cross section of a head- theres about .25" of meat before the water jacket so I wanted to play it safe.
Image

Main thing was smoothing out that shoulder on the runner floors as well as knocking off all the "nuggets" in there.

For the chamber area I just need to clean it all up- taking out all the pointy areas that will heat up during combustion- the DOC recommended a thin 3' or so rigid cut off wheel attached to a drill for this. Using the wheel edge around the perimeter.

Gotta get to work now I will keep posting as I go along.
Thanks for the words of support peeples 8)

Thank you so much for posting this. I've been curious about how the bowls were different before and after, and it makes so much more sense to me. I feel so much better about doing this.

Also, I'm intrigued by this Aussie gasket. I'll have to look into this further. I'm also intrigued by those individual gaskets Slant Six Dan has pointed to in the past.

They are looking great, I think I'll take my stock gasket and copy it into the computer and upsize the ports by X percent or something. I'm very surprised and interested that you got that much out of them. If you compare the pictures which look like they were taken at the same distance it is outstanding. The radius looks good, one thing I didn't do to much was cut around the valve stem. Here is a comparison of the combustion chambers that I've always down to eliminate hot spots and get a overall similar shape chamber, as well as focusing that on the runners. I would suggest that anyone could do this with a little motivation. Great pics, here's my last one (I'm not trying to steal your thunder just give comparisons.
