Well I recently bought an 80 volare sedan.. it has a 7.25.. It has a strange rear end noise in it.. It sort of grumbles now and then.. It's not a gear noise, I can tell that.. It seems like a bearing noise.. but which one?? there are 6 bearings in there, 2 for the pinion 2 for the carrier and 1 for each axle.. the noise is jsut sort of there.. comes and goes with no realtion to turns or accel / decel..

Is there any way to ID which bearing this might be w/o having to tear it all down??

Thanks,

Greg

Greg, it's probably a wheel bearing. Jack up one wheel at a time and run it. You may be able to pin it down that way.

Pulling an axle is easy. Just take off the drum and pull the 5 nuts like an 8-3/4.

I had same kind noise coming from my rear end. It was the front pinion bearing. I bough the bearing kit (4 bearings, grease etc.) from Rock Auto and now it is quiet again.
