Hey guys.the other night i turned on the lights and I noticed my drivers side blinker was not lit up (i was like the passenger side was (with the lights on). To my understanding the two blinkers stay lit when the headlights are on, and blink when you use the blinker lever on the steering column.
So I figured one of the elements in the bulb crapped out I bought two new ones and replaced them both left and right. I get the same effect with the lights on, headlights go on and the passenger side blinker stays lit but the drivers stays dead unless your activating the blinker then it works fine.
Blinkers work fine with the headlights off as well. Any ideas? Maybe a switch or the flasher thing(the round peice with the two male ends under the dash that says flasher on it) I tried the flashers and they don't work either. the passanger side blinker indicator on the dash stays lit but no blinking.
Any ideas for me? I'm trying to get my ride back on the road again after a couple years of down time and this is throwing me for a loop. I just got laid off so at least I have the time to fix it . Thanks in advance -Ryan

(1) check grounds
(2) check all bulbs, and check the flasher unit itself under the dash
(3) what year car are you working one? Cars through the early 70s were wired from the factory to have the parking lights turn off when the headlights turned on.

I know my brother's 68 Dart was wired from the factory for the parking lights to go off when the headlights came on. I am fairly certain that the 69 Valiant was the same way. You might have a flaw in the headlight switch or the wiring for the turn signals. Sounds like there is a short or a bad ground in the passenger side wiring for the turn signal.

Reed, no, 1969 was the first year for all vehicles' parking lamps to stay on with the headlamps, as newly mandated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108.

Ryebread, your description of the symptom is a little unclear, because "lit up" is not specific enough. There are two filaments in each front park/turn bulb: a bright 27w filament for the turn signal, and a dim 8w filament for the parking lamp. The dim filaments should light up steadily when the headlamp switch is at the first or second click. They should remain lit when the turn signal is active, except that the bright filament should flash on and off (effectively the lamp goes bright-dim-bright-dim-bright-dim). With the headlamp switch in the off position, the bright filament should flash on and off (the lamp goes bright-off-bright-off-bright-off). How does the vehicle's operation differ from that?

Whoops! My apologies. I knew the switch was late 60s/early 70s, but I couldn't remember exactly when.

Sounds like the power lead for the park light is not providing power. Since both filaments ground to the same location, the ground sounds like it is o.k., since the turn signal works.

Could be the switch, bad connection (corroded rusty wire), or a bad socket.

Yank the bulb out, grab a multimeter and check the two contacts in the socket with the parklights on, and the blinker on that side too.

On the multimeter, the voltage for the blinker should jump around between 0 and ~12v, and the parklight should be a steady ~12v.
