just wanted to drop by and say hey and ask a few questions about my new addition to the family. i just picked up a non-running 70 valiant 4 door with the slant 6. it has been sitting for about 3 years so doesn't run. i did get it to fire just dumping some gas in the carb. anyway, my question is. i dropped the tank yesterday because the gas is really old and it sat with no gas cap so it was pretty watery and rusty. i noticed my tank had 4 rubber lines that ran out of the left side and up into a metal tube in the trunk. is this like an early charcoal canister set up or something and do i have to get the same style tank or can i get one without the 4 lines on the side? does this mean it is from california and has some sort of emissions? i am brand spankin new to the whole slant 6/ mopar scene so please forgive my ignorance.

Welcome on the board! You'll want to pick up these three books as quickly as you can. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread, and remember that your 1970 engine requires periodic valve adjustment. The correct 4-vent tank for your California-spec 1970 is available brand new. The angled metal pipe can in the trunk isn't the precursor of a charcoal canister, it's a fuel tank liquid/vapour separator used on '70 California cars and all across North America in '71. For '72 they changed the tank shape to separate vapour and liquid inside via a domed top area, and went back to a single vent outlet. If you want to eliminate the pipe can in the trunk, you can use a '72 tank, also available new. Spectra Premium (a Canadian company) makes the tanks, and you can buy them in lots of places, including www.rockauto.com . Save yourself a great deal of future aggravation by finding and installing a '72 or newer fill pipe while you have the tank out; the '70 California + early '71 fuel cap is nearly impossible to find, but the late '71-'76 cap is still easy and likely to remain so. If you find a fill pipe from a '75 or '76 catalyst-equipped (unleaded fuel) car, it'll have the restrictor plate that helps avoid the older fill pipes' problem of spitting gas on the side of the car when you fill the tank.

The precursor to the charcoal canister is actually your engine's crankcase. That's where fuel vapours from the tank and the carb bowl were stored in '70 (California) + '71. The tank vent runs to an extra nipple on the breather cap atop the valve cover, and the carb bowl vents to an extra fitting on the body of the fuel pump, leading directly to the crankcase. Things got a lot better in '72 with the introduction of proper charcoal cans.

thanks for the welcome and i will try and get those books asap. i did pick up a haynes manual today but haven't looked at it yet. both the hose that runs from the tank and the carb are plugged. the one from the tank is plugged on the top of the strut/shock and the one from the carb is plugged at the carb. anyway, it is good to know i can just get a 72 tank. i will need a new filler neck too so are you saying get one from 72 also? what about the charcoal canister? where does it go and what year do i need? i am also going to replace all the fuel lines with 30r9. is that a good idea to do. even from the tank to the pump? the original metal tank to pump line is quite full of rust. so much so that the brand new pump wouldn't suck any fuel through it. since my car is from cali. does it have any other emissions equipment on it? thanks for all the info.

Return it and get your money back. It's missing most of the info you need, and the info it contains is seriously flawed (i.e., there are large errors of fact)

You can't get the fill pipe new, it'll have to be used, though you'll want a new fill pipe gasket and seal. Try for a '75-'76 fill neck. If not, a '72-'74 neck will work fine.

what about the charcoal canister? where does it go
Right front corner of the engine bay. I should ask: Where are you located? Do you have any kind of access to reasonably good wrecking yards? You don't need to retrofit a charcoal canister; you can keep the '70-'71 style vapour handling. But if you do retrofit, the canister bracket would come from a '72-'76 Dart, Valiant, or Duster. Best to use a new canister; they are all rather interchangeable — you'd need one with three ports: CARB or BOWL, TANK, and PURGE. You'd want to add a purge valve.

Not really, no; you want hard line from the tank to just shy of the pump, then a short length of 30R9 to the pump, then do the Fuel line mod between the pump and carb.

You can get a new one (if you're using a '72 tank, easiest to use the '72 lines) or make your own with a tubing bender.

Probably nothing worth worrying about; pretty sure the NOx control devices started in '71 in California. Make sure the vacuum hose runs directly from the carburetor to the distributor without making any stops in between.

i have noticed. i just looked through the whole manual in a matter of about 25 minutes and it was pretty bad. anyway, about the filler neck. i was searching the net and found some for fuel cells made of some sort of large transparent tube it looks like. would that work if i can't find a filler neck? i am in south tennessee. right on the georgia line. i don't know if you have ever heard of mitchell motor parts but they are about an hour away and only specialize in old mopars. i used to deliver to them every day when i was a delivery courier at my old job. seems strange i may go back there for parts now. do you think it would be better to get a canister or keep it the way it is now? what would you do? the hoses on there are rather old and nasty. i was planning to do the fuel line mod as soon as i get her running. i will probably spring for a new one rather that trying to make one. i am way to impatient for that. and i don't even think that there was a vacuum hose from the carb to the dist.? looks as if there has been some "modifications" made in the past. again, thank you for all the help and the links are great. being new to this i am bookmarking any and all web pages that may be useful later.

I wouldn't buy so much as a 5¢ gumball from Mitchell. He is a known con artist, cheat, and jerk.

I just fixed the incomplete "purge valve" link in my post above.
