Hi Guys
Just started tearing down my turbo /6 for an overhaul and when I got the head off I noticed that 2 of the water passages were blocked by the gasket they were the one between 3 and 4 on the manifold side and the one right over the water pump is this normal or was the gasket not punched (either way I missed it when I built the motor in the 70's)
Thanks for any info you can give me

From what I've heard, this is correct and you should leave the gasket alone. I noticed that, but never made any cuts - no troubles!

The cooling system is designed to push the coolent to the rear of the block and then up thru the two large rear holes into the head.
Once in the head, the coolent moves forward and out the thermostat opening. There are a number od small "steam holes" each on the high side (manifold side) of the block, these direct a small amount of the cooler block water up under the exhaust ports.

Bottomline is that the larger block deck "shake-out" holes are blocked-off so the coolent has to go all the way back, if these holes were open, the coolent would take the shortest path and the rear of the block and head would overheat due to low / now circulation.
