Hey guys, I recently did a tune up on my 72 Duster. Obviously, when the motor was rebuilt, the shop put the distributor shaft pointing in any old direction and set up the ignition wires around that. Well I yanked the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor all in one shot.....Now she won't start...occasionally hydro-locks though. I need to get my timing set right and my timing pointer for the balancer notch is missing in action (mounted on the block). Does anybody know where I can find a timing pointer for my car??? I'm in a bad way right now because it's my daily driver. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Just pull no.1 plug bring the piston up on TDC (compression stroke) there are several ways to determine this: 1) you can pull the valve cover and watch the valves........ 2) use a compression gauge and bump the starter till you see psi then remove gauge and slowly bring it to TDC...... 3) hold something over the plug hole so you can feel the compression then come to TDC ......... At that point you can put the dist. back in and adjust the timing from there

Which year vibration dampener ("balancer") is on the engine? Where is the dampener's timing mark, in relation to the crankshaft keyway? (yes, it is hard to see this with the engine in the car)

A 72 SL6 had the timing tab ("pointer") welded to the face of the timing chain cover and the index mark is real close to the crank's keyway.
60-67 engines had bolt-on timing tabs. The balancer's index mark is in a different position on these, at "3:00" from the "straight-up" (12:00) crank keyway.

So, try an early engine bolt-on timing tab and if the balancer's index is still off, remark the balancer.
