thanks for the welcome words guys, I did not keep track of the milage but i can tell you this much we drove from burlington vermont to jackson new jersey on one tank of gas


and yes I am an aircooled beetle guy ! hanging under the dart dash makes me mad! I am used to just taking the hood off a bug and well,having a seat! ha ha..

Combined with a 2.93 rear end ratio if I read things correct.

So lets see... that give you a 2.2 to 1 final drive ratio so at 70 MPH the engine spins just over 2000 RPMs...
Keeping the engine speed down is one key to great MPH.
(low vehicle weight, nice aerodynamics and a good working carb are other keys)

How well did the car pull the Baker grade, could you keep it in OD up the hills?

I have been doing several carb and manifold swaps over the last few years. The exhaust has remained the same, ported out stock manifold and 2 1/4" mandrel bent exhaust and Thrush muffler.

As long as I can keep my 74 Dart moving, and not sitting in traffic too long, mine will get 25 mpg. Sometimes it goes up to 25.5 and down to 24.5 mpg, but is very consistent. That is by keeping it running from to 2000 rpm to 2500 rpm max, 2.76 8 3/4 rear end, 904 and Doc's torque build (approx 160HP) with a 1920 Economaster carb and aluminum one barrel manifold. Tires are BFG TA Radials P225 60 14's. No extra stuff in the trunk, just the spare and jack.

This spring I hope to hit 28 mpg or better with a Weiand four barrel manifold and Carter BBD combination. I would like to repeat past performance and do a better job documenting the results. Our old 77 Volare used to get 28 mpg consistently with the Super Six, and 2.76 rear and 904.

My car weighs 3380 lbs with a full tank, 3600 lbs with me in it. Book specs show up to 3180 lbs. in 1974.

After that test I will go back to a 2300 350 Holley and then the 390 Holley for racing this year.
