I was in on the group buy on the valve cover and noticed they didn't put much effort into the polishing process. Seems mine wasn't the only one, and today I get my 2x1 intake after waiting 4 months and 12 days. The finish/casting isn't the greatest here either. I know they're an Icon of automotive performance, but as such I expected better. Theres flaws and porosity everywhere.

I still like it, I was just wondering if this is the normal quality of the 60's and if so, are they still using the exact same processes, or are they slipping? Also the casting date is 9-5-08 ... 7 days after my order, what took so long? I can see they didn't use any of the time to go over it or touch up any of the rough spots I'm still Happy to have it though, just curious

I noticed the polishing on my cover weas not as good as the last one I bought a few years ago either. I'm sure the vloume discount had an effect. It still looks good anyway.

Sand casting is a combination of process and "art", seeing that a new sand mold is hand made for each part and then distroyed to remove the raw casting. All the shake-out, de-gating and finish work is also done by hand so needless to say, there can be some variations, part to part and also lot to lot.

All the defects you discribed can be controled but it takes more time and effort at the foundry. When I have castings made, I have to watch the foundry and my job closely... basically, be "in their face" in order to to get top quality castings.
