I ran across this conversion for 1995 and older A-518 lock up overdrive transmissions not needing electronics that looks interesting:

Don't know. Dose 727 & 518 use the same case?

A-engine 727 and 518 and 500 and 904 trannys all have same bellhousing pattern. Some minor diffs on earlier trannys you can correct (pretty sure) with a hand drill, or leaving out a bolt or two.
