Okay guys I need your help! I removed the shift lever from the steering column on my 67 dart Auto.. Why? Don't ask I just did. I was going to clean it and polish the chrome n all but as a result of that, I cant figure how in the world you put it back in. Seems that in the steering column housing there is a spring that i need to push in/down before i can put the lever back in. I'm having a hell of a time trying to acomplished this. Any ideas and advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is indeed a spring-loaded shuttle that bears against the tongue (short end of the lever, on the other side of the pivot pin from the part you grab). To reinstall the shift lever, you angle it such that the handle is as close as you can get it to the dashboard and still insert it into its slot. Give a firm push, watching from above to see when the pivot pin holes in the collar and lever line up. Install a new roll pin, and you're all set.

Thanks for the input SlantSixDan. After trying time & time again...It was impossible to accomplish. I had no choice, but to take the steering column apart. And learn through trail and error. MAN what a learning experience! Well to make a long stroy short i manage to put the shift lever back in. It was defenitley the easy way.....just taking everything apart rather than trying to shove it back in. Luckily I didnt break anything. Thanks ounce again slantsixdan for your input.
