You could clean off the battery terminals and adjust the valves while it's running. These two things will help most neglected slants, and it's fun to stick your hands in there while everything is moving. Scape off the electrode on the ignition rotor, too. That's free.

Restoring it can mean a lot of different things. Do you just need it to run? Try the search functions there is a load of tips here for tuning your car . (and free to boot!)
i.e. valves, carb, timing adjustments, etc.
Lots of elbow grease comes in handy to.

If you have to use what you have on hand, a little ingenuity goes a long way- use your imagination.

Like making a pipe out of an apple, just gotta use the ole noggin.

I was kind of kidding, since it's a minor thing, but free. I meant the cathode(?) end that approaches the the electrodes on the cap. It cruds up easily. I recently had a rotor electrode break off, all that was left was the rivet in the center. Once the distributor and motor cooled off, I was able to restart the /6 and make it to my driveway (10 miles on the interstate). It died at the top of my hill, and I coasted down.
For the same money, you can clean off your plugs, and check on your fuel mixture. If the plugs look black and sooty, you have a rich mixture, if they're too clean, it's lean. Should look lightly toasted.

Just because it smokes doesn't mean the rings, there are a few other things that would also need to be checked. Pull your plugs look at 'em and they will give you an idea. You would also need to check your compression at each cylinder and note the differences. Replace the water pump when you can. What color is the smoke and how much of it? Does it look like a mosquito fogger?Good luck.

Humble
Start with the books. Then do a valve adjustment. Check your Pcv valve. Then get back to us with your results. If you need guidance along the way, use the search function and or ask.

Check your EGR valve. Make sure its not stuck and that you dont have the wrong vacuum line hooked up.Try to trace the smoke and see where its coming from. 8)

And read Can I post Images? in the FAQ.
It's under Formatting and Topic Types.

I upload my pictures to www.geocities.com, then go to File Manager, click on the pic I uploaded to view it, then cut and paste the URL to my slantsix.org post.
Then, all you have to do is drag your mouse through it to highlight the whole thing (like www.geocities.com/smog91765@yahoo.com/burntresistor.jpg) and click the URL button.
That just puts in front and back of your image. You can also type that yourself.
Once you learn how to do that, the same steps generally work other places on the Internet that let you post pictures.

It's free to open a geocities account. If you already have a yahoo.com email address, I think you can just log in to geocities with that name and password.
They have directions how to do stuff there.

Oh, yeah.
There is tons of information here if you just Search, get an idea of words that are used a lot by people working on the same type of problem, and then Search again using those words.
Different combos of words, or shortening the Search term gets different results.
When you find something good, copy it down or copy the Post Title, so you can find it again.

Search, Read, Repeat.

You might consider taking some auto shop classes, most communities have these type of adult ed classes and often they are very afforable or free. You'll get some expert help and often you can use the facilites.
