This is my first crack at transmission work. The directions TCI sent are clear, and I understand how to perform the swap. Drop the old VB, pull a spring or two, plug an oil passage, add a spring here, adjust bands, slide new VB in, and button her up. Should be able to get it done right in no more than two or three tries. However, this is my perceived dilemma...

I have a TCI #122400 Manual/Automatic Valve Body to be installed into an A-904 that presently sports a Reverse Manual Valve Body. After reviewing TCI's installation instructions, and consulting Carl H. Munroe's: "Tourqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook", I'm wondering what modifications may have been made to my transmission that need to be reversed so the #122400 will work properly.

Will I find a Kickdown Band & Lever, or has that baby been jettisoned. Dose anyone know of any modifications that require me scrounging parts before starting this project?

All the internal parts for the bands will be there. What you have to find out is what was changed internally for the MVB. Are there servos blocked, springs shimmed up, valves changed, etc.. Most MVB's have the line pressure turned up quite a bit too. :shock:

If you just change the valve body it may shift, it may not shift, or it may shift so hard it knocks your teeth out. :?

Just to clear this up a little for the old bald fat guy. It occurred to me to down load the install instructions for a TCI MVB, and reverse engineer from that, betting most units have like modifications. I almost said assume, but not quite. My untrained eye knows from nothing about stock vs. modified, so extra vigilance is need (read hand holding) on my part.

Possable MVB Changes to look for:

1. TCI instructs one to remove the small "O" ring on the end of 1-2 accumulator piston, and discard its spring.

2. Rear servo piston has some type of shim added as well as a TCI outer spring.

3. Stock front servo lever is replaced by a TCI 4.4 or 3.8 ratio custom lever.

Changes required by the new M/Auto VB:

1. Discard 1-2 accumulator spring

2. Front band servo check for two springs, if two discard outer spring, if one keep in place.

3. Adjust rear band

4. Accumulator spring discard if there is one.

5. Plug direct clutch oil passage

Overlap:

1. May need small 1-2 accumulator "O" ring.

2. May need to remove rear servo shim.

3. May need new stock front servo lever.

4. May need stock rear servo spring.

I think that the line pressure is already set by TCI as the VB is a complete new unit, and has been bench tested, leaving adjustment of the two bands by me. I will check measurement of both line pressure and throttle pressure.

Time has come to gather the missing parts for my valve body swap adventure as the Vernal Equinox nears bringing warmer weather. I have found that low temperatures are not conducive to working on aluminum car parts fastened together with steel bolts, so the project is on hold.

Have you made valve body swaps? If so, would you have a factory spec. Front Servo lever, and a Rear Servo Spring hanging around in your spare parts box that I could purchase.
