Hey all...
My machine shop went to measure my actual engine deck height, and when they went to put bearings into the K1 rods, found that the bearing"tang" releaf in the rods were in the wrong place. They are on the opposite side from where they need to be.

As a result, my rods went back to K1 yesterday......and I need to make sure that anyone who bought the rods checks to make sure that they do/dont have the same issue as I do.
Tom at K1 said 6-8 sets went out.....so lets do a roll call!!

Crap. I'll check.

You sent them back to K1 for a fix?

Lou

I checked the set I have... the bearing tabs are cut wrong on those.
I will give K1 a call to get some return / rework info.

You might want to have K1 check the rods for twist as well...my buddy in Oz bought a set (I shipped them over) for a 340 he was putting together and they had a twist problem with them..he called K1 and looked like they had a bad batch of those as well

I just got off the phone with Tom at K1.
He already has the proper size tab cutter on order and will set-up a machine as soon as it arrives. K1 will get going on reworking some rods they still have in house so it's a good idea to get other sets returned soon so this rework can all be done at once.

If you have a set of these rods (where the bearing tab is in the wrong location) please send them back to K1 as soon as possible. Be sure to include your return shipping information and let them know if it is OK to return the reworked rods via ground service. (or tell them you need rods return ASAP if you are in the middle of an engine assembly)
K1 wants to "make this right".

Here is the shipping address:
K1 Technologies
889 76th Street SW
Unit 6
Byron Center, MI 49315

Be sure to package the shipment well and it's a good idea to use a shipping service that has tracking and delivery conformation.

Hi Guys. While I would like to blame this problem on someone else, I cannot make excuses as this is entirely my fault. I simply missed this on the print. All of the rods are made the same way and exactly like the print that I provided to the machine shop so if you have a set, please send them back and/or contact me. I am sorry for this problem. The only thing that we can do at this point is fix the rods and get them back to you as quickly as possible.

Also as Doc stated above, please make sure you include your return address with the rods. You would not believe how often someone will send a sample rod for some special project without including any way for me to contact them.

It is hard to describe without drawing a picture but the one that is in the cap is where the one in the tower should be and the one in the tower is where the one in the cap should be.

When K1 does the rework, will they machine the new set of tangs into the opposite side of the big end instead of gouping them all onto one side?

Have been emailing Tom, and he said they would try and get my rods in and out of their shop the same day!!
So, I am really pleased.....and think I can get some run time on the engine.....around my block, before LV!!

Doc,

While the bearing notches are not what keeps the bearing from spinning and putting the new ones on the same side would cause no harm, we normally cut fresh notches on the other side of the bore.

Will this compromise strength at all? I assume not, but thought I'd ask.

I showed these rods and pistons to 15+ racers at our banquet this weekend (1/24/09) and they were impressed. Hopefully you/Wiseco will get some calls, Tom.

Thanks,

Lou
