she's alive! went out today and moved the dist just a tiny bit advanced and she was really wanting to run so just messed around with it for a while and paw! she's running. surprisingly there wasn't that much smoke. there was a lot at first but it ran for a good solid minute before it sucked all the fuel from the container i had the line ran to. by the end it was still smoking but not that bad. i mean, i would drive it and just tell people it's diesel. the valves all sounded good so i guess i did that close to right. she seemed to run pretty darn well for not running in over 3 years. i greatly appreciate everyone on here that helped me with this. i would have been lost without your help.

prolonged burnout! funny you should mention that. my buddy and i have a running bet. i say she will. he says no way. it does have drums up front and no power brakes but i still have faith... :lol:

What tires and rear ratio do you have? It's really hard to get a 2.76:1 to spin... with a SG installed at least... you might have a one legger, but I betcha you could do it!

Here's what you do:

1. Get some dish soap ready
2. Apply liberally to the tire on the passenger side rear
3. Call your buddy
4. Burn that tire!

The soap makes for a nice slickery tire... :twisted:

i'm not sure of the ratio. haven't taken the diff cover off yet but i know it doesn't have a sure grip so yeah it will be a one tire fire but that's cool with me. i'm gonna make twenty bucks!

All right! Congratulations! And ditto what Dan said: kudos to you for having the patience and desire to go slow, do it right, and ask questions and listen to the answer. I haev been where you are and I know how discouraging it is to try for days to get a motor to run. The hardest part is over though, and now the real fun can begin.

Pump about 45 psi into the right rear tire... that will help it break loose. :twisted: :wink:

A little bit of bleach and you can spin most any tire. With my '66 Dart 2 door sedan I once roasted the right rear down to the belts. The belts were hitting the 1/4 panel, whap, whap, whap. Tire still held air so I drove it to school the next day and changed the tire there. I've also burned off about 50% of an 8.75R16.5 on my '72 B300 van. Only took about a minute to do. I should mention that was the last half of the tread on that tire and it was bald after that.

A few months ago at work I left about a 100' stripe with my '96 Dakota pickup. It was a 4-banger, but with a 1st gear of about 4:1 and 3.55 rear gears it would light 'em up. Add a little brake pressure and you can lay a very long, dark stripe. My new(er) Dakota is an automatic, heavy, has bigger tires and Sure-Grip so it doesn't burn the tires for squat.

Just be careful not to burn it for too long... the spider gears will get hot enough to weld themselves to the shaft... then you will have a car that does wonderfully going straight, but turns will get interesting...

It usually takes awhile for that to happen, so go get that 20 bucks!

these are all great suggestions. i will definitely try them if i can't get it roasting with no help. i've never done any of these things to do a burnout. and by burnout i mean sitting in one place roasting the tire(s). my cobra will blow the 315's of the back with little effort and even my cherokee will roast the 33"s thanks to a detroit locker, chromoly axles and 4.56 gears. but i neither of those are 39 years old or stock so we will see what happens. i still plan to make twenty bucks though. maybe i will make a video for youtube. nice vid. by the way Joshie. that thing looked awesome and that's sweet that you have a conquest. there is a guy by my work who builds em. he has like 15. i tried to buy one a long time ago but the deal fell through.

Good point...
It's a good idea to top-off the rear end with gear lube before driving the vehicle around and "practicing" it's wheel spinning abilities.
