i just picked up a /6 manifold and am planning on using the front dutra dual and cutting off the front 3 so i can keep the choke (live in cold climate) before i get started i wanted to find out what is the choke like piece at the exhaust outlet for? on all the /6 manifolds i've dealt with they all have one and they have all been frozen up in all different positions. there is a spring on the outside and i'm not sure if i need to do something with it or just leave it alone. i've read the articles about the dutras and on the manifold and neither seems to touch this piece. i picked up the extra manifold so i can keep driving my cars until everything is ready for the swap. thanks

It's a heat diverter to help warm up the intake manifold when cold. I went to a aluminum intake which warms up very fast with out it, so I do not use it. Plugged the holes with bolts. In fact the aluminum intake warms up so much I added a heat deflector (12" by 8" .090 aluminum plate) to help keep the carb from baking. Super cold mornings I have excellent throttle response with no bog.

I consulted with Doc on this issue. Since I will be racing with my son, we have removed it.

Your choice, but with a cast iron intake you may want to keep it in there. I know Dan recommends keeping working.

There's a lot of misunderstanding about exactly what this valve does and why it's there, mainly in the form of people confusing carb temperature, engine temperature, and intake manifold temperature. See here.

Also read up on the subject in these three books.
